10 more Cat face match box collages, made in 2014-2018.H: 9”Mixed media/ collageMadison, WII made 100 of these collages, which reference an Americana woodworking project entering the public sphere as early as 1930. The design elements were provided in periodicals, and the “crafter” would transfer the outline of the parts to a 1/4” plywood sheet, cut them out with a jigsaw, and assemble the parts using glue and finish brads. Although there were mostly specific surface solution tropes employed to create the catface/tail, each person’s choice of graphic materials was an individual choice, and differed a bit, to differing greatly, from the “stock” choices as illustrated in the periodicals. Some were only drawn in with pencils, and some were more fully finished with enamel paint/ upholstery tacks for eyes/noses, and occasionally more eccentric fetishing materials.I gave my considerable collection of objects to a family member, and know that among only 3 collectors, at least 500 are in private collections. These catface matchboxes remain an American folk art Ideom largely missing scholarship and categorization of any kind, let alone institutional focus. by @tlsolien
