We’re thrilled to announce that Sophie Thomas (@tmsophie ) , a visionary in sustainable and circular design, will be gracing our stage at TEDxBerlin Salon! 🎤

For nearly 30 years, Sophie has been a dedicated campaigner and leader, driving change in the design industry. Her unique approach to understanding human behavior through “garbology” - yes, that’s right, digging into trash! - has sparked a revolution in how we perceive waste.

As the founder of Thomas.Matthews, Sophie pioneered the use of waste materials in exhibitions, packaging, and signage, earning her the prestigious title of Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management, a testament to her groundbreaking work.

In 2012, Sophie launched The Great Recovery project, igniting the minds of over 1000 designers to rethink design through circular principles, challenging industry norms and paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Fast forward to 2022, Sophie co-founded etsaW, a climate-tech venture studio dedicated to transforming waste streams into valuable resources and supporting innovative businesses that harness their potential.

My ink has probably seen better days but it’s still going...

Salvaged many years ago from the waste/used colour cupboard at @calverts_london (always loved these guys! 😍), they are still going strong - deep under these wondrous crusts! by @tmsophie

When you make colour, you set up a chemistry experiment and see what turns up. So far a tiny but beautiful thimble full amount of verdigris. by @tmsophie

One of the best courses I’ve done is with Dr David Cranswick - The Alchemy of Colour at @schooloftraditionalarts.

Can’t recommend it enough, it started me on an amazing and colourful journey.

It’s happening again in November for a week. Totally worth it. by @tmsophie

Most interesting thing I have visited at this years @l_d_f_official is in the @blackhorsews district.

Colour Lab: from waste to value
Chroma Waste Lab x Colour of Saying.

Really enjoyed talking to @lauraemilyp about the work and the research she is part of with @rmituniversity and @deakinuniversity @deakin_frontiermaterials around making colour from waste textiles mechanically.

A process of milling creating colours. No need for chemically treating. Fascinating. It’s fitting into developing thoughts around additives and circularity and wastestream potential.

Workshops happening tmw too and it’s open until 6pm. by @tmsophie

A beginning and an end.

The start of making #verdigris by soaking copper scraps in white vinegar (Copper Acetate).

The scrapings from my iron solution (for making my gall ink go black) has become a beautiful orange ferrous oxide.
