Structured Literacy is high-quality instruction in literacy and language. It is based on the sciences of reading and learning. It is a generic term—not one specific program—for the type of instruction that benefits all students and is critical for individuals with dyslexia. Please join us in supporting Structured Literacy in every classroom for every student around the world.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Help us advocate for and empower people with dyslexia this month and all year long.

Did you know? The International Dyslexia Association published its revised definition of dyslexia in October 2025:

"Dyslexia is a specific learning disability characterized by difficulties in word reading and/or spelling that involve accuracy, speed, or both and vary depending on the orthography. These difficulties occur along a continuum of severity and persist even with instruction that is effective for the individual’s peers. The causes of dyslexia are complex and involve combinations of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental influences that interact throughout development. Underlying difficulties with phonological and morphological processing are common but not universal, and early oral language weaknesses often foreshadow literacy challenges. Secondary consequences include reading comprehension problems and reduced reading and writing experience that can impede growth in language, knowledge, written expression, and overall academic achievement. Psychological well-being and employment opportunities also may be affected. Although identification and targeted instruction are important at any age, language and literacy support before and during the early years of education is particularly effective.”

Attention Tennessee Public Educators! Enroll in Online Dyslexia Courses for FREE!

The MTSU Center for Dyslexia at Middle Tennessee State University is excited to announce that, with funding from the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE), all currently employed Tennessee educators of K-5 students now have FREE access to two online, asynchronous courses titled Dyslexia in K-2 and Dyslexia in the Upper Elementary Grades. Once enrolled, users will enter background information then complete a brief pre-assessment. Users will then be separated into cohorts; the first cohort will gain access course content in fall 2026, and the second cohort will gain access to course content in spring 2027.

The goal of these courses is to better equip educators of K-5 students to identify risk indicators and characteristics of dyslexia among students in kindergarten through fifth grade (i.e., K-5) and to serve these students through a structured literacy instructional approach.

If you are currently employed by a Tennessee public school, you must first obtain a TDOE passkey.
