There is a well-known idea that we become the average of the five people we spend the most time with.

I used to think of it mostly in terms of success: surround yourself with people who are more successful, ambitious, accomplished, and eventually you will grow too.

Now I think about it differently. We absorb each other’s definitions of normal.

When you spend enough time around certain people, you start absorbing their standards, their expectations, their relationship with possibility.

What feels ambitious to one group can feel completely ordinary to another. Starting a business, changing careers, investing in yourself, improving your biological age, defining what freedom and wealth is, starting over at 45, relationship expectations and boundaries, talking about an idea that may seem crazy and actually doing something about it.

None of these things change objectively. What changes is your internal reference point.

Spend enough time around people who constantly explain why something is not possible, and eventually their limitations feel reasonable.

Spend enough time around people who are building, creating, learning, experimenting, and growing, and things that once seemed wild or unrealistic slowly start to feel normal and possible.

I think this is a good reason to choose our environment consciously.

The people around us don’t just influence what we do or think. They influence what becomes possible for our own lives. by @tnataly

One of the reasons corporate culture is so difficult to define is that we try to describe something people experience using the language of processes, behaviors and actions.

We can define the values we want. We can define the behaviors we expect. We can design processes, structures and ways of working.

But somewhere in the combination of all of those things, we also create something much harder to define — the experience of what it feels like to be part of that environment.

Maybe that shared experience, that feeling, is culture too. by @tnataly

I recently heard an idea that stayed with me: one of the biggest things that diminishes a woman’s magnetic presence is rushing.

It made sense to me, because there is something about the unhurried presence that feels grounded, feminine, and incredibly attractive.

Slowing down doesn’t come naturally to me. I’m very good at moving fast and getting things done. Even when I’m not physically rushing, my mind often is.

Tea is how I practice the opposite.

Tea ceremonies bring together slowness and beauty. And there is something about that combination — slowing down enough to notice and enjoy what is beautiful — that settles the nervous system, quiets the mind, and brings us back into our bodies and into the present moment.

I’m starting to think it cultivates something else too: femininity - by creating enough space to feel, notice, receive, and enjoy.

Maybe rushing costs us more than time. by @tnataly

I spend most of my professional life in the world of audit. It values data, evidence, logic, and things we can measure. Often we evaluate what we see against established frameworks, policies, standards, and expectations.

I value that way of thinking. But I’m also fascinated by what happens when we allow ourselves to think beyond the frameworks we already know.

I spent the last four days at a retreat exploring ideas about consciousness, ancient texts, human potential, our relationship with our bodies, intuition, and the nature of reality itself.

A lot of what I heard resonated with things I’ve already thought about, felt, or been curious about.

What I enjoyed the most was having the space to take those ideas further, to question some of the frameworks we’ve been given and expand the range of what I’m willing to consider possible.

We inherit so many ways of understanding ourselves and the world around us - from science, education, religion, culture, our families, and our own experiences. They help us make sense of reality.

But some of the biggest shifts in human thinking happen when we start challenging the boundaries of what we know, when we ask what may seem like a stupid question, when we consider a possibility that didn’t fit the existing model.

Some may call it being open-minded. And open-minded to me doesn’t mean believing everything.

It means giving yourself permission to explore beyond what you already know, to question without having to accept or reject, and to consider the possibility, no matter how crazy it may sound or how much it may not fit into the existing system, structure or belief. by @tnataly

I’ve had some version of this conversation many times over the years, especially with people who are doing really good work and genuinely feel ready for more.

I understand the frustration. But I’ve also learned that we choose to participate in the corporate system, with all of its benefits and trade-offs. And understanding how that system actually works can give us a lot more agency in deciding what to do with it.

Every time I watch women at the gym, I think they are superhuman.

A woman walks into the gym and she has exactly 43 minutes. Not an hour to hang out, not a leisurely workout - 43 minutes.

She already knows what she’s doing. One exercise ends, next one. No long breaks, no chatting, no distractions.

If she came with a friend, they are not standing around waiting for each other. One takes this machine, the other takes the next one, then they switch. Not a minute wasted.

I remember watching this around Thanksgiving. The women had already marinated whatever needed to be marinated before coming to the gym. They knew what time the guests were coming, what still needed to be cooked, what needed to be cleaned, what they forgot to buy.

The second the workout was over, the pit stop began. Phone comes out, the kids, answer the husband, AirPods in, get on a call. Quick stop at the grocery store because of course someone forgot the parsley. Home. Shower. Guests. Dinner.

Sometimes I watch women do all of this and wonder if we even realize how much we hold at once. How much planning, remembering, organizing, and taking care of everyone is happening in the background while we’re casually doing a set of squats.

Somehow, somewhere in all of that, we still find those 43 minutes to take care of ourselves too. by @tnataly

I’ve been quietly bringing tea into corporate life.

Sometimes I bring a piece of my tea ceremony to meetings or conferences and share it with whoever happens to be there.

Most people have no idea what they’re drinking at first. They are surprised by the tiny cups, the different teas, and how different each one tastes.

But what I love is what happens for a few minutes around the table - everyone slows down.

In a world of back-to-back meetings, emails, deadlines and constantly moving on to the next thing, tea creates a tiny pause.

You are still talking, still thinking, still working. Just a little more present.

I keep thinking there has to be a place for more of this in corporate life…a little breather in between endless meetings and tasks by @tnataly

I think women need other women.

Whenever I spend time around women I really like and admire, I always walk away with something valuable — a completely different perspective, an idea, a recommendation, or some little life hack. Sometimes I see another woman doing something I never really considered for myself and suddenly think… wait, maybe I could do that too.

Your frame of reference just gets bigger.

Your shopping list usually does too. Put enough women together for a few hours and suddenly everyone knows about a new skincare product, a supplement they apparently can’t live without, a dress they need to order, a doctor they should see, and a place they now absolutely have to visit.

We all make different choices. We prioritize different things. We’re good at different things. And just being exposed to how someone else lives can change the way you think about your own life. An unfamiliar point of view can suddenly make something you hadn’t considered before feel real and possible.

There is also the ability to say what I’m actually struggling with, ask for advice, get a reality check, or hear uncomfortable feedback that pushes me to grow.

I realize that these relationships don’t just happen automatically. You actually have to make room for them.

I think we need women around us who inspire us, challenge us, teach us things, make us laugh, and with whom we can also be vulnerable and real. Life is just better with women like that in it. by @tnataly

I’ve been thinking lately about why I seem to handle some of the harder moments in corporate life relatively well.

There are times when people are overwhelmed — maybe there’s a restructuring happening, people are worried about layoffs, everyone is overworked, there’s too much change at once, or some difficult corporate politics to navigate. And as a people leader, you are often sitting across from someone who is stressed, frustrated, or genuinely doesn’t know what to do next.

I realized recently that one of the things that has probably helped me came from a completely different part of my life.

For a while, I volunteered as a counselor with Crisis Text Line and had conversations with more than 300 people going through some version of a crisis.

Obviously, a corporate crisis and a personal crisis are not the same thing. But I’ve realized that some of what I learned about helping people through overwhelm translates surprisingly well into management.

One of the biggest lessons was that people often already have the answers.

They know their situation better than you do. They have experience, judgment and ideas. But when someone is stressed or overwhelmed, sometimes they temporarily lose access to all of that.

And a surprisingly big part of getting it back is simply feeling heard, having someone really listen. Someone who can acknowledge that what you are feeling makes sense, and then help you slow things down enough to see what is actually within your control, what options you have, and what the next manageable step might be.

I find myself doing some version of this with people at work all the time.

We talk a lot about strategy, execution, performance and decision-making in corporate environments. But big organizations are also full of people trying to navigate uncertainty, change, disappointment, pressure and things they can’t control.

Sometimes good management is knowing how to help someone find their footing again. by @tnataly
