Day 2 of @willowfestnorthwest has been incredibly rewarding and exhausting! Seeing all the weaving come together over the last two days is inspiring. It’ll be planting time in just a few months and I’ll be remembering today while I’m out in the field! #willowfestnorthwest #willowbasket #willowfarm taken in Reed College by @toadstoolfarm_or

Harvest at dawn before the heat hits. The flowers will be fried for breakfast and the zucchini will be in everything until we need a break. #squashblossoms #beattheheat taken in Corvallis, Oregon by @toadstoolfarm_or

EAT FASTER!! We've been allowing this invasive to flourish in several large clumps for months and time is almost up. Ragwort tansy is about to set seed, but the cinnabar moth caterpillars are still out there and I want as many as possible for next year! Timing is tricky, but today I'm pulling all the plants in the sun and leaving some in the shade. #ipm #tansyragwort #cinnabarmoth #willowfarm #invasiveplants taken in Corvallis, Oregon by @toadstoolfarm_or

I was trying to catch the lovely sound of breeze through there willows, but mostly got Jax panting and then catching sent of a vole tunnel. It's really very peaceful as long as you enjoy the rottie soundscape. #rottweiler #willowtree #willowfarm #corvallisoregon taken in Corvallis, Oregon by @toadstoolfarm_or

As our trees grow we are hoping to grow our community connections! We're actively connecting with local weavers, PNW willow farmers and folks looking to start willow based businesses in Oregon over the next 2-3 years. How can we help each other grow? Who are you trying to connect with? We're so inspired by everyone we meet in the local weaving community, let's grow more! #willowweaving #willowgrowing #willowfarm #willowfence #willowcasket taken in Corvallis, Oregon by @toadstoolfarm_or

Willow block 2 update: First year willow planted into rye, just wrapping up mowing to prepare for watering. Why are we planted into the grass? We had limited options for ground prep and cannot use any landscape fabric because of heavy vole pressure. After weighing many options we opted to plant only very large cuttings with wider spacing, mow often and hope for the best. Nearby growers with similar conditions have had success and we’re hopeful that these plants will become strong pollards with increased resilience against drought and rodent damage. Our plans for “Block 3” next year will be a return to smaller cuttings with closer spacing planted into a low growing ground cover. Still researching options for planted ground cover given our unique conditions. #willowfarm #willow #corvallis #heartofthevalley taken in Corvallis, Oregon by @toadstoolfarm_or

The predators have arrived! We’ve been noticing minor damage to new growth on several willow varieties. Our long term IPM (integrated pest management) plan is adding more plants to attract beneficial bugs but for now we’re focusing on observation and minimal intervention. While weeding today I saw many adult ladybugs, and these two hopefully producing lots of future larvae! Almost ready for the first of 4 deep waterings, which will include spraying the new growth to knock back aphids if I keep seeing them. #ipm #willow #corvallis #willowtree taken in Corvallis, Oregon by @toadstoolfarm_or

Second year willow is growing prolifically! May is mowing (and weeding!) month but we took a weekend off the farm to learn from the delightful Goodwin brothers. We had an incredible time, made some new friends and brought home two big sturdy creel baskets. by @toadstoolfarm_or

Spring is popping up even with the cold weather coming back around. The willow don’t seem to mind either way. As far as I’m concerned I’ll take a few more cold nights, we’re already fighting slugs and mosquitoes! by @toadstoolfarm_or
