It is with great sadness that I learned that Mandjao Fati has passed away. Mandjao was a wonderful person and musician! Always friendly, always endearing, even though his life was not an easy one. He will be sorely missed!

To mark this occasion, I’ve selected a photo session I did with Mandjao Fati, Matthias Keul, and Samson Gassama in 2007. At that time, all three were active in the Cologne Music Connection project, and we met at Matthias’s studio in Gebäude 9 in Cologne.

Mandjao Fati was a bassist and guitarist from Guinea-Bissau who had been active in the Cologne music scene for many decades.

Matthias Keul had been active as a pianist and keyboardist in Cologne since the 1970s. He passed away quite unexpectedly in October 2025.

Samson Gassama was a percussionist—a traveling drummer—from The Gambia, and for many years my neighbor on Speestraße in Sülz. I spent countless evenings at his place, eating and laughing with him and his friends, and watching worn-out VHS tapes of long-past performances by his band projects. It was through Samson that I discovered the music of West Africa—and so much more. In 2006, I was able to visit him in Bakau, Gambia. He left this world back in 2011.

Mandjao, Matthias, and especially Samson have shaped me musically like almost no one else. Their openness, curiosity, and boundless musical spirit inspired me. And they encouraged me to forge my own path as a musician. I owe them so much!
Perhaps they’re meeting now, in another world, and grooving together just like they did back in 2005, when the concert photo of the Cologne Music Connection was taken at Gebäude 9.

In meinem Herzen schlägt nicht nur die Liebe zur Musik, sondern auch die Liebe zur Fotografie. Und das schon ziemlich lange.

Seit März 2022 arbeite ich als Fotograf beim Rheinischen Bildarchiv (heute: Historisches Archiv mit Rheinischem Bildarchiv) - und diese Institution feiert nun ihren 100. Geburtstag!

Unser Team hat sich so Einiges zum Jubiläum einfallen lassen, und auch ich darf einen Teil dazu beitragen:

Am 3. Juni 2026 lade ich Euch zu einem Fotowalk ein. Köln um 5 Uhr 30. Auf den Spuren des berühmten Kölner Fotografen Chargesheimer und seinem ebenso berühmten Fotobuch "Köln 5 Uhr 30".

Der Haken daran: wir treffen uns um 5 Uhr (morgens!) - dieser Fotowalk ist also Nichts für Langschläfer.

Den Link zur Anmeldung findet Ihr in meiner Bio, oder auf der Website der Stadt Köln. Die Anzahl der Plätze ist auf 10 begrenzt.
Wer Fragen zur Veranstaltung hat, kann mir natürlich auch gerne direkt schreiben.

Leute, es ist nit zu fasse: Die BÜDCHE BOYS sind zurück. Mit Band. Und das Blue Shell ist ausverkauft!
Wir freuen uns wie bolle, am Freitag mit den Ramönsche den Laden zu rocken.
Und weil ich's kaum erwarten kann, habe ich die Festplatten durchwühlt und für Euch ein paar Bilder der legendären Krawallbrüder rausgekramt.
