Death, Taxes and Tobs being behind on match reports! Catching up here with a cracker of a game earlier this month, with more reports to follow 👀

Strictly Wickets 125/4 : 128/1 Tobs 🎉

This scorcher of a summer evening saw Tobs take on league newcomers, Strictly Wickets. Strictly opted to bat on a surface offering genuine pace and bounce—leaving our part-Aussie Fowles licking his lips at a pitch straight out of Perth.

Fish opened the bowling alongside Chaz, unfortunately copping a C&B chance to the arm instead of the hands and leaving injured. Big thanks to Strictly for sportingly offering a sub-fielder. Get well soon, Fish!

Beades stepped up to fill the overs on a lightning-fast outfield. The turning point came when Lanny turned and pinged the non-striker’s middle stump with a direct hit. That momentum carried into a masterclass from Jon and Fowles—quite possibly Tobs’ best fast-medium partnership spell of the season—squeezing the opposition to an under-par 125.

Channelling Jimmy Anderson's farewell week bravery, skipper promoted JB to open alongside Beades.
A fiery opening over from Strictly brought multiple wides and nipple-high deliveries. Their opener then had Beades nicked behind, but Umpire Chaz rightfully called a head-high no-ball (and later set the stumps up on the popping crease, earning himself a Rodger fine!).

Beades creamed the first change around the park, bringing up a rapid 50 before retiring. JB ran Keith into the ground with relentless 2s before smashing his first-ever career 6! Keith chipped in with a quickfire 18, leaving Curran to knock off the remaining runs with ease.

A win with 2 overs to spare and a man down. Up the Tobs!

Wapping Dolphins 194/4 - 116/7 Tobs CC

Catching up on some match reports here, we start with the tricky cup game for the Tobs last week, drawn against Division 2 Wapping Dolphins.

Hoping for a cup upset, Tobs were made to bowl first in less than ideal conditions. As the wind and relentless rain settled in, the boys dug in against a talented opening pair at the top of the order. Sloan coming up with a peach first ball, swinging one round corners to clean up the opening bats off stump. John came in the middle overs and helped steady the ship with some neat and tidy bowling, picking up key wickets. Dolphins had a big wagging tail and managed to set a big target of 194 with some late hitting.

With a wet soggy ball and a slowing outfield, Tobs were in for a tricky chase. A solid line and length bowling attack from Dolphins picked up regular wickets and kept things tight. Despite an astonishing 52 off 22 from Timbo and some big swings of the stick from Fish late on, Tobs fell short and finished on 116.

Some lessons learned and strong cricket played in parts against a team 3 divisions above, team can hold their heads up high. Looking at our faces, you wouldn't know we'd been battered!

🎉 Old Imperials 149/4 - Tobs 152/2 🎉

On Thursday night, The Tobs faced their most important game yet. Not just the opportunity to go top of the league, the winner of the tie was also granted a place in the first round of the famed Vandermark Cup! Double jeopardy... And the Tobs would bowl first.

Quality opening bowling from Fowles and Fish saw promising early signs, with shots scooped in the air towards long on, to some outrageously optimistic shouts of "catch!" from Fish. He might have tempted fate as soon after, the ball was hit into the upper stratosphere, coming down directly on Fish (with snow on it). Suffice to say it was dropped.

Up stepped spinner JB to bowl his first ball, and I'm sure even he would admit it wasn't his finest; striking the turf a yard in front of him before hitting the opener plum on his pads for LBW!

The Tobs fielding turned pretty intense towards the end of the innings, with some fiery words exchanged between the boys, eager to see off the Imperials middle order. What happened next stunned them into a moment of silence, followed by ecstasy, as Keith took the best catch in Tobs history from behind the wicket (scroll through the pictures to see it)!

To the crease then came the imperious partnership of Beades and Curran, knowing we'd need to more or less match our highest score of the season to take home the win and go top of the table.

Beades and Curran cruised to 72 off the first 8, the latter seeing off the Imperials openers with some beautiful 4s creamed through the covers. As Jon retired on a classy and customary 54* soon after, up stepped Hastings, knowing the Tobs would need to step up the run rate significantly to get over the line.

Thankfully for Hastings, with his admittedly limited but effective range of leg side swings, everything clicked today. Two 6s and a 4 from his first six balls sent the Tobs fans into pandemonium, knowing the momentum had swung in their favour. Stalwart Beades keeping the runs ticking over seeing Keith come in to finish the job with an exquisite 4 off his first ball with four balls to spare in the final over!

We're top of the league. And we're not going anywhere!

Tobs 121/2 v Kenton Super Yams 117/4 🏏

After a chaotic week of yes, no, maybe, and eventually yes from Kenton, the fixture lived up to the hype on a glorious Friday evening in east London. The Yams arrived with a few familiar faces and a suspicious sprinkling of ringer talent, while Tobs came in hunting a third win on the spin.

Kenton batted first against the formidable opening pair of @fluke_jowles and @james_sloan. Both started strongly, bowling terrific little areas. An over of lavish swing from Sloan helped the Yams keep the scoreboard ticking with a few uncharacteristic extras. The scoreboard wasn’t the only thing ticking after that over as @mattlanny was quick to remind Sloan of how many the over went for. ‘Slinky’ later had the last laugh, finishing his spell with three overs for 10 and a wicket.

After a tight start from Mr Reliable Fowles, pressure told as the Yams bit off more than they could chew, leading to a sharp run out. @olliehastings1 bowled tidily, grabbing a breakthrough thanks to Beades, who took a ridiculous left-handed screamer with the remaining three fingers that are not broken on his left hand.

Kenton rebuilt through Bailey, who carried his bat for 31*, while Smith threatened with a punchy 25 from 15 before Sloan, the old ball wizard, worked his magic to remove him. Bates added 17, but Langford’s run out kept the innings in check. Fowles (4 overs for 24) and Curran (4 overs for 28) closed things out, giving little away as Kenton were restricted to 117 from 16.

The chase began with Beades and @keith.dom. Keith fell early to a sharp caught and bowled, bringing Jon to the crease with the job of steadying the ship and giving the Tobs super fans what they deserved: a third win on the bounce.

Jon produced a classy 50 retired not out from 30 balls, including nine boundaries. Beades played the perfect support act with 33 from 31 before being bowled trying to finish it in style with 4 needed.

Dom came in and sealed it with a punishing boundary as Tobs cruised home in 10.2 overs.

Three wins in a row. One point off the top spot.

The Tobs are officially becoming a problem.

Tobs 140/7 v Finsbury Brown Snakes 137/3 🏏

Seeking their first win, Tobs welcomed the Brown Snakes for an inaugural league clash. Losing the toss, Tobs were put in the field. Chaz made an instant impact in his season debut, cartwheeling the middle stump with a clinical slower ball.

The Snakes' opener played a "Sibley-esque" anchor role, reaching a solid 50*. Tobs had to get creative; Lanny channeled his inner Alex Carey, catching a wandering batsman out with a direct hit to avenge Bairstow. Fowles followed up with a seed that sent off-stump flying, helping restrict the visitors to 137.

The chase began with childhood best friends, Hastings and Jon. Their "once in a lifetime" opening stand lasted exactly five balls. After Jon smashed 11 runs, a frantic single left Hastings run out for a diamond duck (0 off 0).

A collapse loomed as Dom fell shortly after. Stevens and Martin stabilized the ship, but the mounting run rate forced risky singles. Chaz played on, while Martin and Sloan fell to further run outs.

With the game on the line, Skipper Lanny swaggered to the crease. Despite Fowles falling for a duck, Lanny and a returning Jon kept the dream alive.

All down then to the final over...

Down to the final wicket and needing 10 runs, Jon sent the first ball for 4. Not one for the "safe" single, he met a short ball on the penultimate delivery and smoked it for 6 to seal the victory! 🚀

The Tobs exorcise last week’s demons to claim their first win of the season.

Tobs 151/8 (15.2) v Balijinders 152/3 (16)

A new season sees the return of some familiar faces. Fresh from his year down under, Fowles returned with sandpaper in hand. 🏏

Opening the season, big hitters Keith and Dom started less than fluidly; Dom was caught behind off a high edge. In strolled Timbo, looking like he had all the time in the world. Powerful hitting and sensible running saw him cruise to 50* despite wickets falling in quick succession around him.

Sloan put his marathon legs to use, running hard with Fish. A slightly less committed final run from a flagging Fish saw him run out, bringing Fowles to the crease. Conscious that the boundary-finding Timbo was still available for the final wicket, Fowles "selflessly" (deliberately) ran a single that wasn’t there. Tobs finished with a respectable 152 to defend.

Fish, known for the most erect seam position in East London, opened the bowling. After some steady overs, a distressing "usual Tobs fashion" middle period saw the scoreboard run away—though we did snag a smart run-out via Timbo.

Then came Sloan the bowler. In metronomic style, he took two wickets in one over: a nice catch from JB and another from Lanny behind the stumps. The fans were in utter ecstasy.

With dreams of a rare opening-day win, Keith joined the attack. Despite some dubious no-ball calls, Tobs had 5 overs to defend 50. Then, the betrayal: the usually reliable Dom dropped a catch off Fowles. In cricket law, this is high treason; Fowles is currently taking the matter to the Supreme Court. ⚖️

It got worse. A misfield allowed a risky two, and in a Nathan Lyon-esque moment, Lanny gathered the ball but missed the stumps. Not wanting his pal to feel lonely, Sloan followed suit with a missed stumping the next over.
It came down to the final over with 10 to defend. An unfortunate wide and a top-edge hack for four made life difficult. Showing fighting spirit to the end, it went to the final ball where a quick single was taken. Match lost by the barest of margins.

A gritty, spirited fightback. The team can be proud. The real winner? Cricket.

Tobs 153 - 154 Camels
Camels win by 2 wickets, with just 3 balls to spare

It was huge fixture against top of the league this week, with both Tobs and Camels knowing that winning their remaining matches would secure them the div 5 title.

A tall order for the Tobs though, without stars, Sloan and Beadle, the latter pulling out earlier this week after surgery on his broken finger!

JB, stepping up as sub captain, won the toss and elected to bat. To the crease went Keith and Hastings.

Despite a very strong Camels bowling lineup, Keith got the Tobs off to a blistering start, hitting 5 boundaries off the first over! Followed up with strong performances from Hastings and Timbo, the Tobs were off to a top start.

A mini-collapse followed, but a rebuild from the tail, including an astonishing knock from captain JB (despite taking a vicious blow to the abdomen from the Camel fast bowler) and Johnboy, left the Tobs with an impressive total of 152.

To the field then, and Camels got off to a quick start, the ball flying across the dry outfield.

The Tobs needed a hero, and a hero came in the shape of Chaz Stevens, with 2 stunning wickets and a run-out in quick succession to blitz through the Camels upper order.

Followed up with Fish and the back end, and backed up by stand-in wicket keeper, Al, taking a couple of great catches behind the stumps, the Tobs were back in it.

It all came down to the last two overs, with 2 more wickets needed, and Camels requiring 14 runs. The Tobs did what they could, but a couple of impressive boundaries from their number 6 sealed the win and, potentially, the league for the Camels.

Stand-in skip, JB said: "Great performance from the Tobs twice against title contenders Camel, two close matches."

Stokey Saints 124/4 v Tobs 125/1
Tobs won by 6 wickets
Pyman's MOTM - Richard Fish

The Div 5 title race is hotting up with Tobs on a 3 game winning streak coming into a huge game against Stokey Saints. Stokey have been a bogey team for Tobs for a while and it was all to play for on a sunny Thursday evening at Vicky Park.

Stokey, inevitably, won the toss and elected to bat first. Fish and Chaz shared the new ball, a role they've both become accustomed to in recent weeks. It was economical stuff from both bowlers, backed up well by some tight fielding.

The boundaries dried up and the pressure was building on the Stokey batsmen which culminated in a top run out from Keith and Lanny. Less than an over later another wicket fell with Fish running out the non-striker off his own bowling.

Beadle and Sloan came on to bowl the final 8 overs and it was copy and paste, with tight bowling rewarded with a third run-out, Keith into the reliable hands of Beades.

Disaster struck in the 12th over, Beadle taking the ball flush on his little finger off his own bowling. A X-ray later revealed two broken bones! Up stepped Tobs debutant Jon, the 4th Curran brother, to bowl a solitary over and take a great wicket with his namesake Johnboy taking a screamer of a catch on the boundary.

With 125 to win, Keith and the injured Beadle took to the crease buoyed by the confidence of successful chases in 2 of the last 3 Tobs matches. A steady start from our two openers gave Tobs a great platform before fireworks from Beadle gave him his 6th half century of the season.

Jon C came out to bat and took Tobs to level scores before being given out LBW by trigger finger Fish. Keith was close to a half century for himself, but with 1 to win Chaz knocked the winning runs into the off-side and took Tobs back into second in the table.

Huge matches against Camels, Kenton and NMCC are still to come, with every seemingly coming together at the right time. taken in Victoria Park Cricket Ground by @tobs_cc

Islanders 125/6 - Tobs 126/1
TOBS WIN BY 6 WICKETS

Tobs and sunny Thursday evenings in Victoria Park go hand in hand, and this week it was our day one friends, Islanders, who stood in the way of Tobs and finishing the evening in 1st place in Div 5.

The mind games started early, with Islanders talisman Rodger turning up half-cut (steaming) and choosing to bat first.

JB continued in his effective new role as opening bowler and struck in the 2nd and 4th over, with Beadle and Sloan both taking smart catches on the boundary.

Beadle turned bowler and got a wicket for himself, with the returning Dom not having to move to take a catch of his own. Hastings was back amongst the wickets too, bowling an Islanders batsmen to leave them struggling.

With their backs against the wall, Rodger decided to take matters into his own hands, alcohol improving his batting skills and leading to some lovely strokes. He even survived a blow to the head, after a wayward throw from skipper, Lanny. Some overs later, a kamikaze runout left his partner stranded, great work from Lanny and Beadle to run him out and the Tobs needed 125 to win.

On the ball-to-the-head incident, skipper Lanny later added 'I apologise unreservedly to Roger for hitting him on the head. I most certainly owe him a beer'

Out strode Keith and Beadle with a spring in their step, after a strong bowling performance, and they immediately took a big chunk out of the target.

Keith fell to a great catch, just a few runs short of 50. In came Dom, whose Bazball-style cameo, along with a classic Beadle 50*, meant the Tobs took home the 20 points and finished the day top of the league.

For a complete performance with a catch, run-out, wicket, and half-century, there could only be one Pyman's MOTM - Sir Alex Beadle taken in Victoria Park Cricket Ground by @tobs_cc
