sitting & pedalling with heavy bags was once a dream. a lucrative illusion of authentic experience, exclusive vistas & feelings of elated gratitude. it rippled in the background as a distant reality, emerging so often as an internal prod "yo toby stop fearing, take a dive". dived, I'm shown a new freedom & granted the first of many trips to come.

UTA - 4th.

Another edition of Ultra Trail Australia has been and gone, holding a platform for people to discover their limits. For me, this event was the only repeated one from the year previous so it served naturally as a direct comparison for a year's worth of growth. Funnily enough I placed the same position, but a few minutes quicker, considering the extra hour of darkness in the morning, that’s a real positive.

The real difference I feel isn’t as simple as a time comparison, I don’t feel nor consider myself a great deal fitter than this time last year. But the real comparison lies within a developed understanding of my own capabilities. Last year was a pleasant surprise and the silver lining to a series of races that I felt I was tinkering with after each one, this year I finished feeling as though we’re just beginning.

Thanks to a @blaketurner_bt for joining the ride, he's taught the invaluable lesson of patience. @bix_aus for keeping me chugging throughout, 110g an hour and haven't felt woozy yet. And an extra special mention to my lovely family for coming up to have a squizz at what has me so excited, it means the world. 💕 taken in Katoomba, New South Wales by @tobysparkes

Toby Sparkes backs it up with another huge performance at the Ultra Trail Australia, finishing 4th for the second year in a row 👏

An incredibly strong and consistent run, taking another 3 minutes off last year’s time on one of Australia’s toughest trail courses

Fueling was absolutely dialled too — smashing 13 Bix gels across the race to keep the engine running from start to finish ⚡️

Massive effort Toby, excited to see what’s next 🔥 taken in Blue Mountains, Katoomba, Australia by @tobysparkes

⛰️🌕 Diverge Skyrun 26km  🌕⛰️

finally I've descended the week long high from @diverge.skyruns s, I never knew reaching out with a curious email would lead to contributing to team @arcteryxausnz over it's entirety. Beside from looking the Arc'teryx part I met copious amounts of beautiful people throughout the weekend who chose to get uncomfortable amongst the rugged west coast moonscape of Queenstown, whether that be people racing, or workin' or volunteering it's many hands that made it so memorable. I reckon I'll forever be inspired by those vigorous enough to try something completely different, I'm often riding the fumes of the human spirit that's exemplified so brilliantly at these types of events weeks after it's all wrapped up.

As for the racing? It was a crazy weekend of it and feel a weird type of endearment to @iron_explorer for weening the best running out of me, it's the ultimate respect to be toe to toe for almost a races entirity. ✊🏽🏁

And the glorious snaps? Thanks for the photos generous photographers. 📸❣️

Australia's about to birth its most serious sky running event yet. @diverge.skyruns is going to tap into the extraordinary launching it's first event out in Queenstown, Tasmania. For those who haven't explored the west yet it's an unforgettable landscape flaunting gnarly ridge lines and spectacular vistas. If you're an ounce curious, there's still tickets for most distances and volunteering is still a possibility. Ready to step away from the ordinary? @diverge.skyruns is ready for you, see ya in May. 🙋🏽⛰️

A few snippets from a franklin river trip from the easter break last year, the franklin river had always felt like this mythical genie I always wanted to meet, but never had the lamp to do so. it was as awe strikingly beautiful as imagined and the moments shared with a solid few will be tales told when wrinkly and reminiscing on it all.
