An enjoyable afternoon studying the old lady moth and digging out some Schminke aqua bronze to create the shimmer on the wings. Couldn't resist flipping it over to see the underside. A very furry body and more shimmer! There is something rather frog-like about those folded legs, don't you think? This specimen might be deceased but I did enjoy spending time with it and glad that it now graces the pages of my sketchbook. #oldladymoth #mixedmedia #watercolour #fabercastellpolychromospencils #schminkeaquabronze by @tod.evans

My husband knows me well... he delighted in presenting me this large dead moth he had found ๐Ÿคฃ Of course I marvelled at the size and the markings... and oh, little sparkles when the light catches it right โœจ๏ธ I found out it is a moth called Old Lady and although common isn't noticed so often as not really drawn to the light. Apparently it does have a liking for sugary things so could be tempted that way! Some say the name comes from its sombre colouring and reminiscent of lacy shawls once worn by old Victorian ladies. With a wing span of 55 -65mm , a not so little beauty I would say!#westnorfolk #moth #oldladymoth #mormomaura by @tod.evans

Has anyone else seen fully ripened blackberries in gardens or fields yet? This is a sheltered sunny spot in my front garden. My eldest grandson came in clutching a handful and asking for a bowl to collect more! It's only July... Think the weather conditions this year will offer us all a bumper early crop, possibly over a fairly long period ๐Ÿ˜‹#westnorfolk #gardendelight #blackberries #climatechanges #inspiredbynature by @tod.evans

Big bee on the Verbena Bonariensis. This plant established itself in the gravel a few years ago and multiplied ๐Ÿ‘ #westnorfolk #gardendelight #verbenabonsariensis #bumblebee #inspiredbynature by @tod.evans

Earlier in the week the Clenchwarton Art Group met for our last get together before a summer break. I couldn't resist a spread based on my vibrant pink peony poppies ๐Ÿ’• They have been such a delight this year! They migrated and self-seeded in the narrow border opposite the kitchen door so can't miss them ๐Ÿ˜„ *Note to self... really need to add a stem to the full poppy flower head...What plant in your garden has been a favourite this year?#westnorfolkartist #sketchbookhabit #inspiredbynature #peonypoppies #artgroup by @tod.evans

Celebrating the Summer Solstice! Wasn't up early enough for sunrise but apparently the actual moment was 9.24am so don't feel too bad ๐Ÿ˜„ Family day altogether in the garden as it's also Father's Day. Enjoy your day too, whatever you have planned ๐Ÿค—A photo that breaks a 'rule'... cropped so the horizon line falls directly across the centre! Some rules are meant to broken and this image speaks to me like this. The light/dark counterchange appeals to me and is offset by the clear blue graduation of the sky. The trees framing the view contain it and my eye delights in moving through then across the wheat field to the distant hedgeline. What are your thoughts? I'd love to know. by @tod.evans

After a shower of rain, that left the air feeling even more humid, I walked the back lane with my sketchbook. I clutched two pens, one black and one dark brown, and had the handle of an umbrella hooked over my left forearm ๐ŸŒ‚ I walked then paused to stand and sketch plants that caught my attention. The thistle was the first line drawing and sound up for the video in 2/6 to hear the clear song of the reed warbler. I tried to pinpoint the bird but sadly couldn't capture it before it flew off further along. As you can tell I didn't linger over each drawing, just tried to capture enough information about the varied nature of each plant! The one I thought was pineappleweed might not be... it did smell of pineapple but when I looked it up noted that it doesn't have petals... can anyone help please?Do you enjoy sketching like this too or does it need to be more 'polished' to satisfy you? #westnorfolkartist #sketchbookhabit #drawtosee #walkanddraw #inspiredbynature by @tod.evans

Common Sorrel and Common Mallow... they might be 'common' but add beauty and corridors of abundance for our insect life! I always stop and admire this bank on my village walk. #westnorfolk #inspiredbynature #villagewalk #commonsorrel #commonmallow by @tod.evans

Have been playing in the garden with my 18 month old grandaughter today. We were blowing bubbles and as they floated amongst the peony poppies I thought what a delightful playful photo it would make ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ’ฎ ๐Ÿซง ๐Ÿ‘#westnorfolk #gardendelight #peonypoppies #bubbles #familytime by @tod.evans

The peony poppies have grown all along the narrow border this year adding a glorious pink wildness with their raggedy heads ๐Ÿฉท Already a few are dropping their petals to leave fresh new seedpods to ripen and dry containing next year's offerings. I delight in the halfway stage where each poppy looks like a dancer with a swirling fancy skirt costume... swipe to see in image 9 ๐Ÿ’ƒ#westnorfolk #gardendelight #peonypoppies #inspiredbynature #greentherapy by @tod.evans

Brilliant day @stow_hall_gardens with Clenchwarton Art Group yesterday. The week of rain finally came to an end and after an early grey sky the sun shone and was so welcome. Even the blustery wind had some warmth in it. After a coffee and chat we dispersed and I headed to the Walled Garden which is now a delightful apple orchard. It hosts a wide variety of native species, plus crab apples and a wonderful old mulberry tree resides in the centre. Time passed so quickly as I perched on my stool surrounded by bird song, bees, and swaying wild flowers. We gathered for a delicious lunch in the cafe before drifting off again. Several returned to continue longer studies they had started. Others (myself included) settled for a different view or location in the garden. I had folded an A3 sheet of cartridge paper into a little book format to capture my day and some attractive clematis in the cloisters caught my eye for the middle spread. Finally, with just 40 minutes left, I sprinted to an area I had noted earlier that was full of yellow and orange california poppies in front of a weathered coat of arms on the site of the old Stow Hall. The group assembled for teas and coffees and enjoyed looking at the work created over the day. Once back home I added a few watercolour washes to the third drawing and was happy that the map of the gardens provided was a perfect fit for the cover! Many thanks to the Hare family and the friendly welcoming cafe staff. The gardens are open Wednesday to Sunday through the summer and definitely worth a visit, with or without a sketchbook ๐Ÿ˜„#stowhallgardens #artgroup #sketchbookhabit #gardeninspiration #mixedmedia by @tod.evans

Walking and admiring the ruins of Ashby de la Zouch Castle yesterday and also delighting in the variety of wildflowers (some may call them weeds) that now inhabit many nooks and crannies. Heavy showers today and spent some time recording a few of my favourites from photos on the phone while awaiting a window of respite for a walk.#sketchbookhabit #drawingfromownphotos #ashbydelazouchcastle #wildflowers #mixedmedia by @tod.evans
