Caught up with my good friend from Fiji Aminisitai Seru at the Australian Police v Fiji Police Test yesterday. We’ve managed to get photos since we first met in 2008. I don’t think we have changed a bit. 🤪 taken in Burleigh Bears Leagues Club by @todd_author_donny_

John Sylvester is an Australian journalist and crime writer. He has written for major Melbourne based newspapers such as The Age, and others. Silvester has also co-written a number of bestselling books with Andrew Rule, based on crime in Melbourne. Some of their works formed the basis of the hit Australian TV series UNDERBELLY. He also appears weekly on 3AW's breakfast program as "Sly of the Underworld".
I sat with John and talked about my book, "DONNY" An Undercover Cop with a Deathwish. Below is a copy of the article and here is the link for those with The Age subscription. https://www.theage.com.au/.../you-re-right-i-m-a-cop-now...

As an undercover cop “Donny Wilson” wanted a hero’s death – anything to stop the pain that infected his real life.
In a perverse way, his desire to die kept him alive. With a shotgun pointed at his head and accused of being an undercover agent, his reckless response convinced the gunman he was clean.
“You’re right, I’m a cop. Now do your end and kill me, you coward,” Wilson yelled back in a potentially fatal game of brinkmanship. The bikies who surrounded him burst out laughing. He had won this round of Russian roulette.
A less convincing response would have led him to be searched and the discovery of the secret body wire that would confirm the truth and seal his fate.
Now clear of the fog, the real Donny Wilson, Queensland police officer Todd Maguire, admits as an undercover he was looking for the reverse of suicide by cop – death by crooks.
“I can’t ever remember thinking that but looking back, that’s what I was doing,” he says.
It wasn’t the job that led him to the cliff (more of that later) but the suicide of his life partner, Karen, a death that still haunts him.
It was on New Year’s Day 2000 in their Gold Coast house. Todd was having a day nap after night shift when Karen’s four-year-old son woke him saying he couldn’t find Mum.
Todd found her. She had hanged herself. She was 31 years old.
Maguire was riddled with grief and guilt. The cop who prided himself on reading people kept asking why he hadn’t seen the signs. by @todd_author_donny_

Season 7 Episode 138 - Episode Overview
What happens when trauma remains unresolved for years?
Todd Maguire joins Coach Liz Blanding for a powerful conversation about traumatic loss, avoidance, self-destructive behavior, and recovery. After his partner died by suicide in 2000, Todd entered a nearly 20-year period marked by alcohol misuse, emotional avoidance, and extreme risk-taking during his career as an undercover police officer.
Todd shares how writing his memoir, Donny: An Undercover Cop with a Deathwish, became an unexpected turning point that allowed him to begin processing experiences and emotions he had carried for decades.
In this episode, you will learn:
• How unresolved trauma can influence behavior and decision-making.
• Why numbing and avoidance may provide temporary relief without addressing the underlying trauma.
• How Todd now connects some of his extreme risk-taking with unresolved grief.
• Why writing became an important part of his recovery process.
• How sharing his story has encouraged other men to talk about their own trauma.
Closing Thought
Trauma was not your fault. Recovery is your responsibility.
We are recovering one breath at a time. Give yourself grace and stay fearless. Bye for now.

@catherine_ashton_critical founder of Critical Info published a new article on their Substack blog, "There Is No Right Way to Grieve", built around our conversations together and bringing together six different perspectives on grief, trauma and loss:

Candice Mace, Clinical Psychologist and Researcher
Bryan Petheram, Grief Counsellor
Christine Pedley, Grief Counsellor, Death Doula and Celebrant
Linda Rowley, Wellbeing Consultant and Coach
Todd Maguire, former Queensland Police Service officer
Rosie Batty, family violence prevention

The article explores the different ways people experience grief, why there is no single “right” way to grieve, and what can happen when we expect people to simply move on or be okay.
