“The images that you’ll see here represent the best of each of three portrait approaches that I used when I visited Todd’s studio back in May of 1992. I was very impressed with his complete immersion into his own art, and I was inspired to make a photo of him that revealed him and also nodded to his techniques. When he told me that he had a darkroom there at his studio, I made a black-and-white negative of him with some Polaroid Pos/Neg film that I had, and printed it right then and there. Todd then drew on that print (or, maybe he drew on a piece of glass that we stuck to the print), and I made more photos of him incorporating that BW print.”

TODD MURPHY: BIRD ROOM

Visit the gallery to see Todd Murphy’s exhibition, ‘BIRD ROOM’, now on view at LYdM.

Todd Murphy (1962–2020) developed a highly distinctive multidisciplinary practice that bridged photography, painting, sculpture, installation, and drawing. Drawn to the immersive power of scale, he created expansive narrative scenes that feel at once cinematic and surreal.

Murphy’s images are not captured so much as constructed. Working from hundreds—sometimes thousands—of individual photographs, he isolated, enlarged, layered, and rephotographed discrete elements to build entirely new pictorial worlds. Birds, animals, figures, landscapes, and objects become characters within these carefully assembled narratives, their relationships unfolding across monumental compositions. In ‘Bird Room (black and white)’, images photographed in the natural history museums of Washington, DC, and New York transform into an immersive scene in which the order of the museum gives way to something stranger and more dreamlike. The seamlessness of the final image belies the extraordinary accumulation of fragments beneath it, inviting the viewer to consider the boundary between the real and the imagined.

Now available at Johnson Lowe Gallery: Todd Murphy’s Murmurations Series

In the work of Todd Murphy, the dress operates as one of his essential “key frames,” a recurring image that marks a point of transition within his larger narrative cosmos. It is not fashion, nor portraiture, nor nostalgia. Murphy uses the contour of the bodice and the arc of the bell skirt as a direct signifier of the human body, a stand-in for humanity itself. The dress carries cultural memory in its folds. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century garments, bodices and structured skirts appear in his studio as vessels of historical charge. Their silhouettes allude to difficult inheritances—slavery, displacement, war—without illustration. The structured bell skirts bind and circle the absent body, suggesting both refinement and constraint.The dress, in Murphy’s language, becomes the site where beauty and brutality coexist.

Happy International Museum Day! 🩰🎨

Museums aren’t just for paintings behind glass. At their best, they’re living, breathing spaces where every art form has room to move—literally. Dance meets sculpture. Music meets installation. Movement meets visual storytelling. That interdisciplinary magic is what makes museums so vital for artists of every kind.

The shots above are from when some of our incredible adult dancers performed at the Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art—including moments warming up just outside the blackbox theater, framed by the artwork itself before stepping on stage. The performance took place inside Studio Theater in Exile, the blackbox venue tucked right within the museum.

This wasn’t our first time collaborating in that space either. Our previous performance there was part of The Conscience of a Nation, an exhibition by V.L. Cox—a powerful series rooted in human rights, equality, and her nationally recognized ‘End Hate’ doors installation. Dance, poetry, and theater were all woven into the exhibit, with performances inspired directly by the work on display—including a dance suite choreographed by Sharon Simmons Wright. Sharing movement in dialogue with art that carried that much weight reminded us exactly why interdisciplinary spaces matter.

Museums like HVMOCA don’t just showcase art—they create dialogue between artists, mediums, and communities. We’re so grateful to keep returning to a place built for that kind of exchange.

For this edition of "In the Backroom," we’re highlighting Blue, now at Johnson Lowe, by the late artist Todd Murphy.

Murphy’s encounter with a white stag on Little St. Simon's Island has become foundational to his visual language: the animal appears as apparition, a sudden irruption of the sacred into the everyday. In subsequent works, the stag stands in snowbound forests constructed from twig and wire, or emerges in luminous isolation against black ground, its body rendered pale, almost spectral. It is at once sovereign and solitary. The antlers, extended into branches or fused with actual foliage, collapse the distinction between animal and environment.
