Made it back out to Kinston yesterday to donate some materials and time helping @kevinmalbritton with @thelineactionsports park that’s been years in the making ever since The Unit closed in Greenville. We cut some foam, moved a lot of foam, and I got an education from one of the best wooden ramp builders in the world @livewireconstruction about modern day foam pit design which was far more labor intensive than I ever thought it would be. Ron and his son are absolutely killing it out there with the build. If anyone has the means or time to donate or volunteer I know Kevin would appreciate it. So many people from the area trickled in and out to help throughout the day and it was a true community effort which was incredible to witness! Yesterday’s @cherokeebikefest event was dialed. You couldn’t have asked for better weather, just one day ahead of the heat wave! @robbietaylor MC’d the whole thing and lined a lot of pockets with some much needed gas money! The dudes were absolutely rippin all day and as far as I could tell everyone stayed in good health by the end which is always an added plus for a contest! Big shout out to Cherokee and its locals for having such an awesome park and event and everyone who helped and contributed to the event, you guys rule! There are far more women in freestyle these days than there was 30 years ago, the first gal I met that rode something other than a racetrack was Hillary Eickhoff. I had just moved back to Kansas City from Austin around late 2001. Hillary had already established herself as a local in the scene by then. She and I mostly rode our local indoor park together but would occasionally venture out to other spots, this one being the Lawrence Kansas Trails for the day with our friend Craig Lang (Late 2002). Even back then I remember thinking how rad it was that we had a local female rider. Nowadays it’s not uncommon to bump into women shredders everywhere, whether it be at parks, trails, or even street spots. I love how much the hobby/sport has evolved over the decades and become more welcoming and unified. #waybackwednesday #bmx #35mm taken in Lawrence, Kansas by @toddnichols
