‘Cocooned‘, on view at @atmacontemporary til 19 feb

『作茧自缚: a silkworm spinning a cocoon as a protective outer layer that wraps itself up 』
one’s actions, thoughts or defenses can turn into self-limitation that is trapping themselves

We weave our cocoons in the name of protection,
yet they are built from fear

The true barrier is our unwillingness to understand,
choosing our own thoughts makes us feel “safer”,
but self-protection is mistaken for clarity.

When our unease earns our trust,
it shapes the way we perceive the world.

Look at the cocoons we’ve woven for ourselves
Has our form of “protection” softly turned into our own imprisonment?

Tofu Sze Yu delves into the layered terrain of the soul and the delicate bonds between people.

Emotions, adoration, doubt, control, tenderness, surface as complex negotiations within every relationship. Her iconic large eyes serve as portals, urging us to look past surfaces and recognise the quiet truths beneath.

Drawing from the philosophy of liubai, Tofu embraces intentional emptiness, allowing negative space to hold meaning. These pauses—much like in human connection, become sites of trust, imagination and unspoken understanding.

Through soft tensions and spacious stillness, the works invite us to meet our inner worlds with honesty, so we may meet others with greater compassion. Even in moments of loneliness or conflict, Tofu reminds us that we are ultimately intertwined—returning, in the right conditions, to our most open and authentic selves.
