I miss that laugh every day. If you’re grieving, I’m here.

One of the things I struggled with most when my mom died, was the thought of how much distance had grown and would grow between today and the last time that I saw her. I was scared to forget her — her voice, her scent, her laugh that vibrated through even the most filled rooms, the way that she looked at me when she was proud of me (and when she wasn’t), her unique way of looking at life and savoring it, her pink lipstick…all of her color, for that matter.

As time has passed behind me, I’ve realized just how much she is apart of me, as I remain apart of her. In her physical absence, I’ve been made aware of her constant presence. I love her and, most days, I feel closer to her than ever before.

Forever & always, her baby I’ll be.

Do you remember the first time you felt your loved one after they passed?

〰️

I do, so vividly. I remember getting my eyebrows done (I had to look my best for my momma’s funeral) and telling my esthetician about my experience losing my mother over the weekend. As I spoke, my body felt electrified. I am used to getting chills here and there, but these were full body chills that wouldn’t go away. I couldn’t help but smile.

I knew she was with me.

In those moments, I trusted wholeheartedly that she wouldn’t have left me if she knew I wouldn’t be okay. I knew that she knew she could help me more from a different place, a place from which I could feel her, but my physical eyes could not see her.

I knew that she never really left.

Beginning my week with thoughts of them… 🤍

When I was in the thick of my grief, I felt powerless, like there was nothing I could really do except…grieve. I’ve found that this applies to every emotion we experience — the more we fight a painful emotion, the greater the disservice we do to ourselves. In allowing my grief to move through me, sitting with my pain and feeling it deeply, I empowered myself to let it go when the time came. I acknowledged, surrendered to, and honor my grief.

In the first few months without my mom, these were the things that helped me the most, as I attempted to make a severely uncomfortable situation a little more comfortable. Everything felt hard. I learned to trust that I was capable of giving myself a cushion, of sorts, as I dove headfirst into my pain.

Before I knew it, my feelings of powerless transformed into feelings of powerful.

One of the easiest ways for me to connect with my momma is by scrolling through old photos. I am so thankful that, in this day and age, we can have so many photos and videos available at our fingertips. I can recall countless nights of scrolling through my momma album in bed and having a good cry. Live photos, especially, captured little moments that I never want to let go of.

〰️

What are some ways you try to connect with the people you’ve lost?

Happy Eclipse Monday & thank you for 100 followers 🤍

When my mom first died, every day was dreaded. I could distract myself, sure, but the moment I was still, I was overwhelmed with emotion. I didn’t know who I was in her absence. The days accumulated and I realized that, actually, I did have an identity outside of being my mother’s daughter. I’m still getting to know this version of myself each day, but I love who I’m becoming.

Grief differs from person to person, but Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross identified five stages of grief that are commonly experienced among individuals.

While these emotions seem to hit all of us at some point, the stages don’t always occur in this order. You might think everything is good one day, that you have made progress in healing, then you smell her perfume or drive past a restaurant she showed you and you are overcome with anger at the thought of her absence.

And that’s okay.

🤍

How have you encountered any of these stages of grief?
