Simply sitting on the toilet to do is not enough. Anyone can catch a wee.

What we really want is to start teaching our children the skills they’ll need to be as independent as possible.

We want them to be able to listen to their body and have the confidence to sit on the toilet.

Be confident to give things a good even when they’re new and even a bit scary.

We want then to have the physical strength to pull their pants up and down.

These are all skills that we can start supporting our children with well before they start learning to use the toilet.

If you’re wanting to start toilet learning this summer, start building the skills now don’t wait.

I’ll teach you how!

The skills are a part of the learning journey and built over time.

Build the skills your child will need well before they need them.

So what does this look like?

1. Does your child have dry nappies for a couple of hours at a time? This is a great sign that your child’s body is getting ready and they’re developing some control.

2. Can your child follow and remember a one step instruction? That’ll help when it comes time to remember the steps.

3. Communication doesn’t need to be verbal, it could be non-verbal cues like pointing or leading you somewhere, it might be a sign. When a child can let you know what they need this helps to build confidence and independence.

4. Independence skills like pulling down and up their pants.

5. Fostering confidence and curiosity helps to build intrinsic motivation.

We love fostering an environment where children want to use the toilet and have the skills to do it as independently as possible.

đŸ’© 1 & 2 are a pretty good clue that your child could be constipated.

đŸ’© 3 and 4 are usually considered normal poop however just because they look good doesn’t mean that they absolutely are.

If your child is straining no matter what their poop looks like it’s worth talking to their GP.

Some children who suffer from constipation may still go every day.

They may even be having what you may think is a really loose bowel motion but it is in fact leaking.

Leaking is where liquid đŸ’© from higher up slides past the compacted đŸ’© and leaks right out.

While đŸ’© 3 & 4 are usually a good sign they don’t provide the whole picture.

If you’re worried about your child’s đŸ’© or if they’re struggling with passing a poo on the toilet, it could be worth talking to your doctor about it.

DM me if your little one is struggling to pass a đŸ’© on the toilet and I’ll send you some ideas.

So many people think that because their child is doing a daily đŸ’© they can’t be constipated and that’s just not the case.

We know that more than half of children who have constipation have đŸ’© that seems pretty normal (consistency and frequency) but if they’re straining that’s a đŸš©

If you have been noticing your child straining on the toilet

Saying they need to do a đŸ’© and then they can’t go

Saying their đŸ’© hurts

You’re seeing skid marks even when they haven’t been for a properđŸ’©

It’s time to have a chat with your doctor.

Save this for later or share it with a friend.

For some children “getting stuck” inside a toilet is their biggest fear.

Sometimes the first step is simply entering a new bathroom. We need to go in before anything else can happen.

Working on little steps in the right direction can help build confidence.

To build confidence try letting them open different doors and locks.

Have them go into the toilet with you without any pressure to do anything.

You could also try standing outside the door and not locking it.

I also love it when my children overhear me talking to another adult about them. I’d mention how brave they are and how they try things even when it’s bard.

Does your child avoid going into new toilets?

Many children struggle with wiping their bottom. It’s hard to see, hard to reach and a bit yucky.

Play is a great way to help children learn more about their bodies.

This game helps them to touch and feel something they can’t see and then work out what is there without looking.

Simply pop a range of random objects under a tea towel and encourage them to tell you what they feel.

Disclamer: your child might like this game so much they set it up for you 😅

The most disgusting public toilet I’ve seen in a long time and this place is supposed to be for kids.

Some children are naturally more sensitive to the environment and we all need to need to feel relaxed in order to use the toilet.

If your child is struggling to use the toilet when you’re out

Maybe it’s because they worry about falling, or the bathroom is too bright or dark. Some have overwhelming sprays and others have bad smells. Maybe it’s too quiet or too loud

Or just absolutely filthy like this one.

Some of these challenge are easier to fix than others.

Soem things we can try

- Popping a folding stool and seat in the car.

- We loved having a lockable carry potty for the boot of the car when the public toilet wasn’t an option

- Showing your little one how to check and wipe the seat before they go to the toilet.

I know for sure I wouldn’t want to use this toilet myself. How about you? by @toiletlearning

People think that the goal is for their child to sit on the toilet and do a wee or poo.

Loads of courses will try to sell you a programme that’ll promise you that your child will learn to use the toilet in 3 days.

These courses don’t care about how your child is feeling, if they’re intrinsically motivated, confident and have the skills they need to use the toilet independently.

If your child is resisting using the toilet, worried about it or not showing any interest we understand and we’ve been there.

I’m an early intervention teacher and I’ve worked with hundreds of children as they’ve learned how to use the toilet.

We’re going to show you how to support your child to use the toilet in a way that feels good.

Follow along and we’ll show you how. by @toiletlearning
