At this year's Igbo cultural festival, the conversation went beyond celebrating our language and culture to asking an important question: is Igbo being carried with us into the technology we use every day?

TokataHQ is working to make Igbo properly supported across AI, voice technology, search, translation, captions and other digital products, while building visible demand for inclusion.

Igbo belongs in the technology we use every day.

We're bringing Igbo into the rooms where tech gets built 🎉

TokataHQ is partnering with Umu Igbo Unite to host our first virtual roundtable: Igbo in the Digital Age.

Igbo artists, actors, content creators, AI researchers and tech company executives, in one conversation about how tech companies decide which languages their products support. And there's live Q&A, so you can put your own questions to the panel.

Our culture is beautiful, and our language carries it. 🧡
Over 30 million people speak Igbo. Yet most of the apps we use every day still don't support it. Igbo shouldn't be missing from the digital world.

That's why TokataHQ and UmuIgbo Unite are bringing the community together for a virtual roundtable:

Ndi Igbo Ndi Oma! Oge anyi ga etinye Asusu Igbo na ikuku eruola nu! Let’s come together and put Igbo Language in tech. #fyp #PutIgboInTech #IgboLanguage #igboamaka #igbo by @tokatahq

We asked Siri to play our Igbo songs. 🎵
"Achalugo" by Ugoccie ❌ wrong song.
"Love Egbugomo" by Chike ❌ same artist, wrong song.
Then a Spanish song with no artist name ✅ exact song, first try.

More than 30 million people speak Igbo. When tech can't hear our language, our artists and creators lose listeners, streams and reach.

Igbo belongs in the technology we use every day. 💚

Igbo music deserves to be heard, understood, and discovered.

When platforms cannot understand Igbo, artists can lose streams, reach, and revenue. Automatic lyrics, captions, voice search, and discovery should work for Igbo too.

This is why we are pushing for better Igbo language support across music and tech platforms.

If you love Igbo music, use #PutIgboInTech and help make the demand visible.

Tag an Igbo artist, creator, or music lover who should see this.

If you speak Igbo, create Igbo content, enjoy Igbo music, or care about the future of our language, YOU are TokataHQ.

Igbo creators spend hours manually captioning videos because tools like CapCut don't support Igbo auto-captions. Meanwhile, creators in other languages can do the same work in seconds.

We cannot keep working around these gaps in silence and expect things to change. No one will fight this battle for us. We have to make our voices heard.

TokataHQ is a nonprofit working directly with technology companies to get Igbo properly supported in the products we use every day.

Here's what you can do TODAY:

📢 Speak up: Share this video, tag your favorite Igbo creators, artists, and influencers, and use #PutIgboInTech. We need technology companies to see the demand.

🤝 Join the work: We're looking for volunteers with skills in research, technology, content creation, design, community mobilization, and more. Sign up at tokatahq.org.

Don't just watch this video. Take one action today.

We need to do more to advocate for this. Igbo can be complex due to the different dialects, but there should be a standard ‘central Igbo’ form in which we should be able to get captions.
And over time we can then also evolve the caption/translation system and add diffferent dialects. It’s definitely possible.

Shoutout to @tokatahq for their great work!
