As an artiste manager your job isn’t just to take bookings or accept calls from prospective bookers. Your job also includes making your artiste look good, and keeping him/her in the good graces of both clients and the fans too.

It’s your job generally to look out for the artiste and make him/her look good and feel good. Besides nobody likes to call out the artiste when they err they would rather tackle or bad mouth the manager which is easier to do. So as a manager you have to figure out a way to get around these things. Yes it can be a thankless job because most artistes are selfish and only look out for themselves. But it’s part of your job and priority to help the artiste navigate the industry waters.

Music is a universal language that transcends barriers, and brings people together regardless of race, tribe, or culture.

Managing an artiste isn’t as easy or glamorous as people looking in from the outside often assume. Some don’t even see it as a proper job, but it is one of the hardest jobs anyone will ever do or aspire to.

When there is mutual respect, both parties are more likely to be open about their ideas, opinions, suggestions and concerns. This will in turn can lead to better decision-making and a more productive working relationship. Also the artist and manager are more likely to be able to resolve conflicts in a positive and constructive manner.

In 2017 during an interview I said this and 4/5yrs later it’s manifesting.

As an artiste when making music always think about how far you want your music to go, where you want it to be played, listened to or heard. Think beyond Nigeria, Africa, remember music is the only art/form of expression that travels without needing visas.

As an artiste, especially an upcoming artiste, always make sure you have a budget/plan in place. Even when you feel like you recorded the jam of your life, that hit single you’ve been waiting for, make sure you have a strategy, a proper plan and budget to go with the scheduled release.

Cos your favorite artiste puts out a new release & it goes viral you assume it’s simply because he is blown or already known? No! If most of your favorites tell you the planning, the strategizing & the budget behind each of their releases you will open you mouth in awe? So Beyoncé put out an album without an announcement you thot there was no plan/budget?

Lots of people make the mistake of thinking the music will sort itself out & the fans will readily hop on it and make it pop/viral. This is a misconception most people have.

Don’t listen to your friends & well wishers who’ll be screaming release it, what’re you waiting for? Most of them won’t even stream the music on release or help promote it by posting about it or telling people to download or check it out? All they want is free music downloads, free tickets or to say they know a celebrity. Some will only support you as long as it doesn’t involve their time, data or money or it benefits/favours them. They only support you with lip service nothing more.

Don’t allow peer pressure or the pressure to release new works make you put out songs when you aren’t ready with a budget, plan or strategy for it.

If you don’t have a solid plan for your release don’t put out the music. As long as the music isn’t out yet it’s still new and fresh and you can edit, re-mix, re-master it any time but once you put it out it becomes old and no longer new. And once that happens you cannot take it back or do anything about it and if it doesn’t catch fire that’s it another release out there wasted. #share LINK ON BIO👆🏾 taken in Lagos, Nigeria by @toksduttie
