POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Design is not neutral.
Culture shapes everything.

So how do we create places that people do not just visit, but carry with them?

I’ll be speaking at Design Hotels Talks during Milan Design Week as part of Alcova Talks, alongside Lani Adeoye and Shalini Misra.

Our panel is Expanding Futures:
Reframing Design Through New Cultural Lenses.

Monday 20 April, 12pm
Moderator: Jasmin Jouhar

Hosted at Baggio Military Hospital, one of the sites transformed by Alcova this year, under the wider theme Designed to Stay.
We’ll be exploring what makes places endure.

Memory.
Atmosphere.
Meaning.

And the cultural lenses that shape how we design, host and belong.

If you’re in Milan, I’d love to see you there. by @toluadeko

Scale

Standing at the threshold of the Brandenburg Gate 🇩🇪, I found myself struck not just by the monumental scale, but by the sheer material weight of the architecture. There is a profound honesty in these pillars; they possess a stoic, weathered patina that speaks to the passage of time and the layering of history.

In design, we often talk about the “human scale,” but there is something deeply restorative about encountering a space that deliberately humbles you. Looking up at the colossal rhythm of the stone, I felt a sudden, quiet grounding. It was a reminder of our own transience—the realisation that we are merely guests moving through a sequence of stories much larger than ourselves.

It is a beautiful paradox: feeling so incredibly small, yet entirely present. It’s these moments of architectural lore - where stone meets spirit - that remind me why we design with intention. We aren’t just building structures; we are crafting the backdrop for the human experience.

Whenever I’m in Paris, I’m never chasing the obvious.

You’ll find me in the quieter corners.
Small boutique hotels full of character.
Streets lined with antique shops and beautiful furniture.

That is the Paris that makes me feel alive.

Metallic Movement

Stillness, with a sense of motion.
Arte’s metallic woven moiré catches the light, shifting as you move through the room.

A hand-painted fireplace by Will Foster Studios grounds the space - sculptural, tactile, quietly commanding.

Save this for your next inspo board.

Where the room does the talking.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the Atelier Rooms, shadows and shimmer set the tone.
Light drifts across gold-washed walls,
each surface revealing its own quiet story.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every piece is chosen, not simply placed
a considered composition,
where objects speak to one another without interruption.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A space for observing, where art, texture and light to lead the conversation.

Materiality is at the heart of every project.
When creating a scheme, every finish is considered, from the smallest detail to the most visible surface.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“I often begin with the walls, a colour or a stone, then build the palette slowly, like layering a cake.
Textures fold into one another, tones settle, and something unexpected is introduced to keep the space alive”.
@toluadeko
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is in these quiet decisions that a room begins to find its character.

Which material would you begin with?
Save this for your next palette study.

Studs and rivets not as decoration, but as detail?

Hand-applied rivets, gold-leafed.
A marbled surface, layered by hand.
The meeting of contrast and calm.
a portal framed with quiet intensity.

A gesture. A memory. A mark of the maker.

Love this detail? Save this post for later inspiration.

Frills and Fringes
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is something quietly evocative about fringe on joinery.
This ombré chainette falls in a soft gradient of colour,
its header finished with three rows of cord.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Set against brushed stainless steel and polished brass rivets, the pairing creates a contemporary tension.
Movement meeting structure.
Lightness meeting weight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A small study in contrast.

Palomino. A mood. A moment.

I created the Palomino Lounge as a space where performance meets materiality, where every surface tells a story.

Design is never solo.
We created this floor lamp with Martin, inspired by the transformation of wax from solid to liquid, forming a soft melt pool on the surface. Finished with bespoke shade by @ashadeaboveuk , set against a silvered mirror and hand-painted marbled wallpaper by Will Foster Studios.

Circle Time, Reimagined
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s something so special about circular seating - it invites people to relax, connect, and engage. Here, a chandelier feature draped in fabric anchors the space, while hand-drawn murals by @timnawoollardstudios frame the scene with artistry and warmth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you like circular seating layouts in social spaces?
