ICARUS AND THE SUN
Mural for Photography-studio in Melbourne, Australia
Paint & Graffiti
~ 2m × 6.5m
2024

Icarus soared through the sky with all his might, flying so close to the sun that the heat detached the feathers off his back and burned the wax to his shoulders.
This myth can both be seen as what makes humans so great (their ambition/aspiration for more), as well as what can make them fall (our ego/pride/hubris).
However, when telling this story it is often forgotten that if Icarus didn’t spread his wings properly and fly high enough, he would soak his wings and drown in the sea (Complacency).

Having a Greek last name, I’ve always felt drawn to Greek mythology in particular.
The story of Icarus is one of my favorites, as it resonated with my inner world more than any other over the past few years. This mural represents a more personal version of the myth, one that I adapted to my own narrative.

In the last two years I decided to completely withdraw from social media; first because I felt a sense of inauthenticity towards it and later on as I withdrew from social life in general.
Yet, as creators, this platform is one of the greatest tools for passionate expression — a place where we can commit ourselves to something higher.
Feeling now aligned and having a clear vision with this account, I would like to make it an oath to Art. taken in Melbourne, Australia by @tom_amphiarus
