“Unlike Stanley Whitney or Josh Smith’s neo-gestural compositions, Peter Halley’s pop theatrics, or Philip Taaffe’s neo-ornamental appropriations—all of which index recognizable stylistic traditions—McGlynn’s project is notably free of claims to either authenticity or irony. His abstract imagery engages the present ambivalently, acknowledging its uncertainty as both the subject and the condition of painting. While early geometric abstract art was often utopian and universal in its ambitions, McGlynn’s work is defined by contingency and hybridity, remaining in active negotiation with its own history and relevance.
….His straightforwardness avoids both parody and sentimentality; instead, he sustains a quizzical stance that complicates categorical boundaries and invites active engagement with painting’s unsettled condition as it unfolds in real time. “스탠리 휘트니(Stanley Whitney)나 조시 스미스(Josh Smith)의 신(新)제스처적 회화, 피터 핼리(Peter Halley)의 팝적 연극성, 필립 타페(Philip Taaffe)의 신(新)장식주의적 차용처럼 각각 뚜렷한 양식적 계보를 가리키는 작업들과 달리, 맥글린의 작업은 진정성이나 아이러니를 주장하려는 태도로부터 현저히 자유롭다. 그의 추상 이미지는 현재를 단정적으로 규정하기보다 양가적인 태도로 마주하며, 오늘의 불확실성을 회화의 주제이자 그것이 성립하는 조건으로 받아들인다. 초기 기하학적 추상이 보편성과 유토피아를 지향했다면, 맥글린의 작업은 우연성과 혼종성을 본질로 삼는다. 그의 회화는 자신의 역사와 현재적 유효성을 끊임없이 협상하며 스스로를 갱신해 나가는 과정 속에 존재한다.
