I'm from Barcelona and I love to draw patterns, zentangle or artwork inspired on it since I discovered them in the spring of 2016.

https://tangle-together-summit.heysummit.com/?sc=e7bGVL3t&ac=fyWwB4Lb

In this post, I present a double grid of bulbous forms, or an ogee grid, as it is commonly called in English. The idea came to me while looking at Anica Gabrovec’s (@zen.linea ) free interpretation of @kazu_kazu.mi ’s Miho tangle. I’ve included a short tutorial explaining the structural alteration Anica made that led to this design.

The history of this pattern in a Zentangle context goes back to 2018.
Sue Jacobs, CZT, deconstructed and presented it on her Facebook page under the name Cra-Cra in August 2018. It is an interesting deconstruction that emphasizes the presence of the auras. She launched the challenge of adding more deconstructions, and Lynn Mead ( @a_tanglers_mind) contributed with a magnificent simplified deconstruction. Here I show my contribuition. I know that @zen.linea is also exploring this pattern, and I’m pleased to announce that we’ll soon be able to enjoy her own unique perspective on it.
Explore different deconstructions and related versions of this pattern
•	Cra-Cra by Sue Jacobs, CZT — deconstructed from a television commercial.
https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=2125038314383749&set=a.473633004766735
•	Lynn Shelton Mead, CZT — simplified deconstruction. Available in the comments on the same Facebook post.
•	Creatod by Lianne Woods, CZT — a derived pattern directly inspired by the Art Deco version of the design but totally recreated. A different design.
https://tanglepatterns.com/2026/04/how-to-draw-creatod.html
•	Kujira by Kumiko Hashimoto, CZT — inspired by a motif used by the Japanese painter Daisuke Kagawa with a narrow, branching forms where there is no room for auras.
https://tanglepatterns.com/2026/07/__trashed.html
There is no fully cohesive database of Zentangle patterns, but considering the chronology, I would reserve the name Cra-Cra for the Art Deco versions with auras, and Kujira for the narrow, branching versions.
In the case of my own deconstruction, as Lynn Shelton Mead also did, I am responding to Sue Jacobs’ invitation on her Facebook page to contribute new deconstructions, and I therefore call it Cra-Cra.

This tile presents a well-known design: an interwoven pattern of arches with auras inspired by Art Deco. In the next post, we will take a closer look at this pattern and trace its history within the Zentangle world.

In this post, I show the deconstruction of three closely related triangle grid patterns. They share the first five steps and differ only in the last one. To make the visual differences easier to understand, I isolate the Gestalt forms of an arrow and a Y. For didactic reasons, I perceptually combine the vertical stem introduced in step 4 with the chevron connections created in step 6. The decorative treatment is, of course, completely free. In this tutorial, the aura variation has been chosen.

Introducing this pattern for the first time. It is part of the Triangle Grid series, alongside Pickpocket, Gospel, and Burokrat. Notice how Y-shaped and arrow-shaped forms alternate column by column. The design can also be developed using only the Y form or only the arrow form. Deconstructions tomorrow.

I introduced the Bowtie fragment alongside Necktie in 2017. Since Bowtie shares the same underlying structure as Marnie by Chrissie Frampton, I later renamed it Minimal Marnie in one of my tutorials. I still believe it has a distinct personality of its own, and I'd like to showcase its specific arrangements here alongside Necktie, its sibling tangle.

I created Pergamon in 2022. It is a tangle that defines its outline by repeating a simple motif combining a line and a spiral. That spiral can be interpreted as a rolled fold of paper, much like in Eddyper and Zenplosion Folds.

Around that same time, I attended zenAgain 2022 in Newport with my Oasis friends, where Zentangle® introduced Wyfore, another pattern that also evokes rolled paper. It was a wonderful coincidence.

Among all the arrangements I explored, there was one that pointed toward Wyfore, although I simply regarded it as one of those variations that naturally emerge when the kinds of variations that emerge when I keep pushing a tangle further and further. Maria Thomas and I happily compared our sketches and shared the synergies we had discovered.

Before publishing Pergamon, I felt it was important to acknowledge Wyfore.

My habit of publishing my tangles rather slowly also meant that Monster, by Yoko Kageyama, appeared on TanglePatterns before Pergamon. It, too, features a rolled-paper motif that was already present in my sketchbooks. Fortunately, I had also considered that arrangement to be merely an optional extension rather than an essential part of Pergamon.

In the end, despite having lost the original sketchbook, I managed to reorganize all the material and finally present Pergamon together with its own characteristic arrangements.

As the tutorial shows, the spiral is the true invariant of Pergamon. The rolled-paper effect is simply its original expression, not an essential requirement. That distinction ultimately defines the identity of the tangle.

Grouping auras is an easy and fun technique for generating designs, as I proposed in a previous post.

In 2016, shortly after discovering Zentangle, I created a pattern that was essentially identical to Slyver, along with two related derivatives: Yum Yum and the variation presented here.
Of these three patterns, I only published Yum Yum. The other two remained in my sketchbook for too long, and in 2019 @jodygenoveseczt independently introduced Slyver. Since then, I set my own versions aside.
However, I don't want to let this idea go to waste, nor do I want to contribute to the growing number of tangles that differ only marginally from one another. I believe this proposal can be understood perfectly well as a variation of Slyver. It is also a matter of taxonomic economy.
In my view, this variation can coexist naturally within the Slyver family because it preserves the same essential generative grammar (a zigzag with alternating arcs). What it changes is a local connection rule: instead of meeting at a common vertex, opposite arcs connect through an offset junction, creating a distinctive sense of depth.
