🏛️ ROMAN MAXXING - one unique Roman find at a time, with story behind 🗺️

EP.04 Eat Like an Ancient Roman in Pompeii

🍅 Follow @tomato.explores for more unique destination experience like this.

You spend a whole day walking Pompeii. Learning how they lived, what they ate, where they drank — reading it off plaques, behind rope, at a distance. Then you walk out the gate and it’s over.
10 minutes away, you can sit down in it instead.

Frescoed walls in Pompeian red. The table set the way theirs was. A two-handled wine cup — the one Bacchus is always holding in the mosaics. They hand you the clothes at the door, and the staff are dressed too. It’s the one part of Pompeii you’re allowed to touch.

The name isn’t decoration either. A caupona was the real thing: the roadside tavern where Romans ate, drank, and stayed the night. Pompeii’s excavated ones are still there, counters and all. Most working-class homes in Pompeii had no hearth — cooking indoors was a fire risk, or just impossible. So they ate out. Archaeologists have found 158 food counters in the city.

Two set menus, the Gladiator or the Eros. The restaurant says some dishes follow ancient Roman recipes — I played it safe, since we’d just survived a day of thunderstorm and hail, and had spaghetti with a whole red prawn and a breadcrumb-crusted fish fillet. Both very good. Saving the ancient dishes for another adventurous time.

📍 Caupona Pompei — Via Masseria Curato 2, right across from the Pompeii archaeological park entrance. Down an alley by the underpass, easy to walk past.

🧷 Save this for your Pompeii day

Greece island hopping has been on my wish list for 3 years. 🇬🇷
When I finally started planning, I thought it was simple — pick a nice beach, book a ferry. Then I realized Greece has 200+ inhabited islands across 6 different island groups.

If this is your first time planning a Greece island trip, the choices are genuinely overwhelming (in a good way). This mini planning guide also includes some must-knows that might seem obvious to locals but nobody tells you before your first trip. 🍅

See you in the Greek islands! 🌊☀️⛵

If you want to walk Westeros and Essos in real life, these are the 3 places I’d send you, and exactly how I did each one.

🍅 Follow @tomato.explores for more Game of Thrones & cultural findings like this.

1. Dubrovnik, Croatia
👑 King’s Landing from season 2 on. Cersei’s walk of shame starts on the Jesuit Stairs in the Old Town, and Fort Lovrijenac stood in for the Red Keep.

🟢 How I did it: a guided Game of Thrones walking tour from @viator

2. Girona, Spain
👑The cathedral steps played the Great Sept of Baelor in season 6, when the High Sparrow held it. Margaery’s walk of atonement was filmed right on those steps.
A few streets away, the old town turned into Braavos: Arya begging blind, the Waif chasing her through the alleys, their fight at the Arab Baths. The Sant Pere de Galligants monastery even became the Citadel in Oldtown.

🟢 How I did it: a free walking tour. You pay what you think it was worth in tips.

3. Sevilla, Spain
👑 The Royal Alcázar is the Water Gardens of Dorne, mostly in season 5. Look for the Mercury Pool, the Baths of María de Padilla and the Charles V Pavilion. Co-creator D.B. Weiss said nowhere on earth looked more like the Water Gardens they had pictured.

🟢 How I did it: self-guided, with the Real Alcázar of Seville’s official audio guide on my phone. It came with my entry ticket.

🔍 Comment WESTEROS and I’ll send you the links to all three tours.

🍉 It‘s just a watermelon. Until you read what’s written on it.

🚌 Frida Kahlo was 18 when a bus crash drove a steel handrail through her hip. By most counts she had 32 surgeries after it. In August 1953 part of her right leg was amputated. The next year she painted a cut watermelon and wrote VIVA LA VIDA across the flesh. Long live life. The museum‘s account says she added those words eight days before she died, in July 1954.

💍 She and Diego Rivera married in 1929, divorced in 1939, and married each other again in 1940. In 1957, the last year of his life, he painted watermelons too. It was the last painting he signed. He wrote nothing on his, and he never explained why.

🎵 In 2008 Chris Martin told NME he took Coldplay’s album title from a Frida Kahlo painting. He said he loved the boldness of it. So most people who have sung Viva la Vida have been singing a dying woman‘s sentence without knowing whose it was.
Her ashes are in the house where she painted it, in an urn in the corner of a room you can walk through. By most accounts Diego asked to have his mixed with hers. He was buried across the city instead.

Send this to someone you’d write those words for.

☝️ It’s just a middle finger. Until you know whose.

This is EP.05 of 🔍 IT’S NEVER JUST. One ordinary thing at a time, and what made me stop.
🍅 Follow @tomato.explores for the details hiding in things you’d walk straight past.

🔭 In 1633 Galileo was tried in Rome for saying the Earth moves around the Sun. The verdict called him vehemently suspect of heresy. He was made to publicly take it back, kneeling, out loud. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest outside Florence and died there in 1642.

🥚 Galileo took the words back out loud and then kept working anyway. Under house arrest, and going blind, he finished another book. It could not be printed in Italy, so the manuscript was smuggled out and published in the Netherlands in 1638. He was right about the Earth. The church took until 1992 to formally acknowledge his judges had got it wrong.

✂️ For 95 years he did not get the tomb his followers wanted. In March 1737 Florence finally moved him into a proper monument in Santa Croce. During the move the coffin was opened, and his admirers took three fingers, a tooth and a vertebra. They kept the hand that told the truth

The middle finger never left Florence. It sits in an egg shaped glass case on a marble base, pointing straight up.

People read a lot into that finger now. Some see devotion. Some see defiance. I think it depends on whether you have ever been told you were wrong.

Send this to someone who was told they couldn’t. You already know who.

🌉 It’s just a bridge. Until you find out what it was for.

This is EP.04 of 🔍 IT’S NEVER JUST. One ordinary thing at a time, and what made me stop.
🍅 Follow @tomato.explores for the details hiding in things you’d walk straight past.

🚤 This Baroque Masterpiece was built around 1600 to link the interrogation rooms in the Doge’s Palace to the cells across the water. Once a prisoner was sentenced, this was the passage they walked.
One last glimpse of Venice through the windows, and their freedom was gone.

📝 That story has an author. Byron, an English poet living in Venice, opened Canto IV of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage with “I stood in Venice, on the Bridge of Sighs; a palace and a prison on each hand.” He wrote it in 1817. The bridge was already 200 years old, and the Republic that built it had fallen twenty years before.

👩🏻‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏻 A romantic myth claims that couples who kiss in a gondola under the bridge at sunset will share eternal love. The 1979 film A Little Romance sent a generation of tourists looking for it. Some credit 19th century gondoliers inventing it for customers. Regardless of the source, people still queue for it anyway.

Two sides of the story: the sentence and the kiss.
Two sides of the city: the rational and the romantic.

Send this to your partner in crime. You already know who.

🌹 It’s just a rose. Until you eat it.

This is EP.03 of 🔍 IT’S NEVER JUST. One ordinary thing at a time, and what made me stop (or drool).
🍅 Follow @tomato.explores for the details hiding in things you’d walk straight past.

In Yunnan, China, a rose is not just something you put in a vase. It is an ingredient.

The one everyone knows is the flower cake, (Xian Hua Bing). Flaky pastry, rose filling, sold on every other corner. It is said to go back more than 300 years, to a cake maker in the Qing dynasty. Get the batch when they are fresh out of oven, you won’t regret it.
Then it keeps going. Rose tea. Rose pudding. Rose egg tart. Rose Bagel. I am carving it now 🤤🫠

🥀Kunming in Yunnan is home to the biggest flower market in Asia, reported to move four to six million stems a day and fly them out to Japan, Korea, Singapore and Thailand.
So the place that fills half of Asia’s vases is the same place that eats its own.

It’s just sand. A geologist disagreed.

This is EP.02 of 🔍 IT’S NEVER JUST. One ordinary thing at a time, and what made me stop.
🍅 Follow @tomato.explores for the details hiding in things you’d walk straight past.

Behind a small shop in Plaka there is a room full of sand. A geologist has been collecting it from beaches around the world and lining the samples up on the wall, each one labeled with the beach it came from. Even on the same island, sands from different beaches can be completely different.
Some of it is volcanic. Run a magnet through it and the black grains lift straight out.

Then he handed me a microscope. I saw so many details in what we call sand.
My favorite part: a whole baby starfish disguised as a tiny rock.

He makes art out of it too.
I brought home a Venus made of Milos sand.
A farmer found the real Venus de Milo on this island in 1820, and she has been in the Louvre ever since, carved out of marble. Two centuries later someone here is making her again, out of the beach.

It’s just marble. Bernini disagreed.

Pluto’s fingers press into Proserpina’s thigh and the stone gives the way skin gives. That is not me being dramatic. The gallery’s own description of the work says his hands sink into her flesh. Bernini was 22 when the started this.

Same building, a year later, the David.

7 months from start to finish. His biographer says the face is Bernini’s own, carved while he watched himself in a mirror. Both his hands were busy holding a chisel and a hammer, so someone else had to hold the mirror up for him. That someone was Maffeo Barberini, who was elected Pope Urban VIII before the sculpture was even done.

Then Apollo and Daphne, where her fingers have already started turning into leaves.
The same man wrote the verse carved into its base. Whoever chases the joys of fleeting beauty, it says, fills his hands with leaves and plucks bitter berries. A warning, cut into the stone underneath a god grabbing at a woman who is turning into a tree.

Bernini finished all three before he turned 27. 🤯

📍 Galleria Borghese, Rome
☀️ Pro tip: book the official guided tour before you fly. I loved it, and I would not do this place without one. Entry is timed and runs in two hour slots. Give yourself more time than you think and leave room to walk the gardens afterwards.
