GK SHOT-STOPPING | MAXIMUM INTENSITY 🧤⚽️

A goalkeeper training drill designed by Tom Fawdry @tomfawdry86 for Minnesota United.

One thing I particularly like about Tom’s goalkeeper sessions is the way he organises the exercises around short bursts of maximum intensity.

Each sequence lasts approximately 7–10 seconds, but those few seconds are packed with action.

➡️ React to the initial shot
➡️ Make the save
➡️ Recover immediately
➡️ React to the rebound
➡️ Keep working until the ball is out of play

The key rule: every rebound is still live.

The goalkeeper cannot relax after making the first save. The next action might happen immediately, requiring another reaction, adjustment or save.

And that is exactly what makes this approach so valuable.

In a match, goalkeepers rarely face a series of perfectly isolated shots with time to reset between them.

A save might produce a rebound. A deflection might change the trajectory. A second shot might arrive before the goalkeeper has fully recovered his position.

Save → recover → adjust → save again.

By keeping the sequences short but extremely intense, Tom creates a realistic demand without turning the exercise into a prolonged conditioning drill.

The objective is not simply to make saves.

It is to maintain the quality of goalkeeping actions under maximum intensity, even when the situation changes unexpectedly.

GK FOOTWORK | PLAY THROUGH THE PRESS ⚽️🧤

A goalkeeper footwork pattern with Tom Fawdry, using a simple build-up picture @tomfawdry86

The two goalkeepers represent the centre-backs, while the coach in the middle represents the N6.

The sequence:

➡️ Pass into N6
➡️ N6 sets the ball
➡️ Play through to skip the line
➡️ One-two with the left centre-back
➡️ One-two with the right centre-back
➡️ Reconnect with N6 and start again

GK is constantly adjusting his position, opening his body and preparing the next action before the ball arrives.

The pattern recreates a common build-up situation:

Find N6 → use the set → break the line → combine with the CBs → reconnect inside.

A simple way to work on goalkeeper footwork, passing quality, body orientation and rhythm in possession.

BACK 4 DEFENDING | STAY CONNECTED ⚽️ at Brisbane Roar 🟠⚫️ @brisbaneroarfc under Michael Valkanis @michael.valkanis_official

A 6v4 numerical disadvantage looks difficult for the defending team.

But if the back four is organised, connected and moves as one unit, the attackers can still find it extremely difficult to create goal scoring opportunities.

This practice designed by Iacopo La Rocca @iacopolarocca and Tom Fawdry @tomfawdry86 focuses on some of the basic principles of defending as a back four

➡️ When can the fullback jump?

If the fullback already has a direct opponent occupying the wide area, he cannot simply leave the line to press inside

➡️ What happens when a centre-back jumps?

The other three defenders immediately squeeze in behind him.

The objective is to close the space he leaves, protect the central channel and block the next passing lane.

➡️ What happens when a fullback jumps?

The rest of the line shuffles across together.

The important principle is that one defender’s movement creates a reaction from everyone else.

CB jumps → line squeezes
FB jumps → line shifts

Defending is not four individual 1v1 situations. It is four players solving the same problem collectively.

And this is also why a well-organised back four can often deal comfortably with a 6v4 numerical disadvantage.

The attacking team may have two extra players, but if the defensive line stays compact, protects the dangerous spaces and moves together, those extra numbers become much harder to exploit.

Numbers create the advantage. Organisation decides whether you can use it.

MD-1 POST-SESSION EXTRAS ⚽️ at Brisbane Roar @brisbaneroarfc under Michael Valkanis @michael.valkanis_official

A simple finishing competition at the end of the session with Tom Fawdry @tomfawdry86

Tom plays a hard ball from behind the goal into the attacking player.

The player has only 2 touches:

➡️ First touch — control the ball inside the D
➡️ Second touch — finish from inside the D

And the rule is simple:

You score — you stay like Nathan @nathan.amanatidis 👏
You miss — you’re off to the changing room 😅 @noah_maieroni

No extra touches. No second chance.

A simple way to add pressure, competition and finishing quality at the end of an MD-1 session.

DEFENDING AS A UNIT ⚽️ @michael.valkanis_official

Tom Fawdry @tomfawdry86 working with the defenders at Brisbane Roar ⚫️🟠 @brisbaneroarfc

The focus is on the details of defending together as a connected line:

➡️ Keep the distances tight
➡️ Stay connected
➡️ Avoid being played through
➡️ Shuffle together as the ball moves
➡️ Protect the spaces between defenders

The attacking team has to move the ball and find a way to play through or around the defensive line and score into the mini-goals.

For the defenders, the challenge is to stay compact and move as one unit rather than reacting individually.

Once the first attack is finished, the action continues immediately with a cross into the box, forcing the defenders to reorganise and defend the second phase.

Stay connected → protect the middle → move together → defend the box.

A simple practice, but full of important defensive details.

THE DETAIL THAT MAKES THIS FINISHING DRILL FLOW ⚽️

Same finishing exercise designed by Tom Fawdry @tomfawdry86 for Brisbane Roar @brisbaneroarfc — but this time we keep the original sound 🎧 and focus on Tom’s coaching involvement

Rather than leaving the finishing actions completely unopposed, Tom applies roughly 50% defensive pressure to create more realistic pictures for the attackers.

For the N9:

➡️ Tom applies pressure from behind as he receives with his back to goal
➡️ N9 has to protect the ball and lay it off into one of the mini-goals
➡️ Then immediately reposition and attack the box for the through ball

For the left winger:

➡️ Tom steps out to face the winger
➡️ Gives a realistic 1v1 defensive picture
➡️ The winger has to cut inside around pressure before finishing

It isn’t full opposition — but it’s enough to affect the player’s body position, timing, decision and execution.

And that small amount of pressure is what makes the whole drill flow.

Instead of finishing against empty space, the players are constantly receiving information from an opponent and adjusting their actions.

5-BALL FINISHING MASTERPIECE ⚽️🔥

An outstanding finishing drill designed by Tom Fawdry @tomfawdry86 for Brisbane Roar FC @brisbaneroarfc under Michael Valkanis @michael.valkanis_official

Ball 1️⃣
Left winger cuts inside and finishes

Ball 2️⃣
N9 receives with his back to goal and has to lay the ball off into one of the mini-goals

Ball 3️⃣
N9 immediately continues his movement into the box and receives a through ball to finish

Ball 4️⃣
Right winger cuts inside, beats the opponent 1v1 and shoots

Ball 5️⃣
Right back receives in the wide area and delivers into the box for everyone to attack

➡️ Cut inside & shoot
➡️ Back-to-goal play from N9
➡️ Run in behind
➡️ 1v1 attacking action
➡️ Wide delivery & box arrivals

What I really like about this drill is how many different attacking situations are connected in one continuous sequence.

Different positions. Different finishing problems. Constant movement.

▶ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹.

A game-realistic goalkeeper training idea by Coach @tomfawdry86 connecting two different game moments.

𝗠𝗧 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲:

First, the goalkeeper is involved in the switch of play and supports the offensive organisation. Then, the goalkeeper must quickly transition into goal/zone defence and deal with a close-range cross.

The key is the transition from supporting possession to recognising the threat, scanning the box, adjusting the position in relation to the ball and defending the cross.

The goalkeeper must decide whether to come out and deal with the cross or transition back into goal defence.
