Just returning from an amazing three days in Madrid at GXG, the Global Gathering for the Experience Economy. It brought together 300 senior decision-makers from 35 countries working across live entertainment, immersive experiences, IP-driven attractions, museums, festivals, venues, sports, and cultural institutions.

GXG offered a deliberately intimate setting for business networking, collaboration, sharing best practices, and discussing common challenges. It was a valuable opportunity to connect with peers from around the world and explore what’s next. Sitting with a new colleague from Warsaw in this event photo. taken in Madrid, Spain by @tomgabbard

Incredibly exciting news for us at Blumenthal Arts. This is way beyond just hosting one of their great shows. It’s a longer term partnership to work together on multiple projects and build our creative capacity in Charlotte. This has been four years in the making since I first met Jordi Selles to see his ground breaking immersive production of Next to Normal in Barcelona.

Our visit to Norway came just as the nation began grieving the loss of King Harald V. The photo is from a ferry we were on.

Last night, we visited the Norwegian Royal Palace in Oslo, where throngs of people of all ages continue to arrive with flowers. Amid their grief, you could also sense a deep pride, a strong sense of community, and an affirmation of their shared identity as Norwegians. by @tomgabbard

Sometimes you meet the nicest people when you need them most.

I took a good tumble down a grassy, rocky hill—breaking my glasses and leaving my face pretty bloodied. I’ll spare you that photo.

On our way to find a bathroom to clean up, our guide asked a cyclist cooking a meal if he had a first-aid kit. He returned with two traveling buddies who were nurses and well equipped. They applied just the right bandages in spots they carefully selected.

Meanwhile, our guide, a former Luxottica (eyewear) product manager, repaired my glasses with their surgical tape. They were all Italian, so the entire event played out around me in Italian.

A rough tumble, but a wonderful reminder of the kindness of strangers. taken in Lofoten, Norway by @tomgabbard

Our adventure in Norway moves to a ship for the next four days that ferries people between smaller cities. We’ll have short stops to see that city while they take on cars and passengers. Our ride ends in Kirkenes, which is at the Russian border. taken in Svolvær, Lofoten by @tomgabbard

Dolly Parton was the real deal—smart, hardworking and with an endlessly generous spirit. I was fortunate to see that firsthand as a co-producer of 9 to 5: The Musical on Broadway and a lead producer of the national tour. She was hands-on in supporting both.

Photo was taken with Dolly at the tour’s opening night party in Nashville, along with my producing partners Mike Isaacson and John Breckenridge.

One of my favorite memories is from press night in Los Angeles, attended by more than 350 members of the media. About 25 minutes into the show, during a scene change in the dark, we heard the sound of grinding metal. The stage manager dropped the grand drape and announced that the performance was being paused because of a technical problem.

Soon the house lights came up slightly—a sure sign it wouldn’t be a quick fix. My wife, Vickie, and I were seated behind Dolly and members of the 9 to 5 film cast.

As Dolly stood to visit with one of her former castmates, Vickie spontaneously called out, “Dolly, sing something!”—knowing, of course, that she would.

A handheld microphone quickly made its way to her as she stood in the aisle of the Ahmanson Theatre. She spoke about what an honor it was to work on her first Broadway musical, then led the audience in singing “9 to 5” while hammers and grinders echoed from backstage.

Just as she was about to sing “I Will Always Love You,” she was told the show was ready to resume. “Okay,” she said, “we’ll save that for the next thing that breaks down.” Fortunately, nothing else did.

Dolly frequently checked in on the cast and shared her special fudge brownies. On one bitterly cold January night in Chicago, we celebrated her 65th birthday. The audience sang “Happy Birthday,” our company manager, Chris Danner, arranged a special chocolate cake, and the governor proclaimed it Dolly Parton Day.

Dolly, we will always love you. by @tomgabbard
