Tom Groves
The works are from an ongoing series Shallow Water Blackout 2025 which engages with everyday experiences that appear at once familiar and otherworldly. Through fragmentary views of bodies and objects, the photographs seek to unsettle straightforward interpretation. By inviting a slower encounter with the image, the work aims to cultivate a sense of pleasure within the strange and the resistant, moments that are at once disquieting and affirming of life’s perpetual excess.

Today’s contributing artist is Tom Groves.

From the London-based artis we present a project titled ‘Like a Prayer.’ This collection of analog photographs is a part of a larger body of work that takes its inspiration from British fetish archives. Groves allows the uncontrollable to exist and resound in a controlled environment. And yet, it is not an attempt at suppression, neither inventory nor creating an encyclopedia of kinks. There is a genuine artistic curiosity and impulsive playfulness that took over this project.

Tom’s work explores the relationships between desire, abstraction and the material world. Working across staged and observational image-making, his practice draws on still life, the body, and domestic space to examine how meaning emerges through surface, gesture, and encounter. He aims to treat bodies and objects as equivalent elements within the frame, disrupting fixed hierarchies between subject and object. Influenced by fetish imagery and modernist abstraction, his work engages with the tensions between control and its resistance, intimacy and distance, clarity and ambiguity. Rather than resolve meaning, he tries to sustain a space of excess and uncertainty, where interpretation remains open and contingent.
