Let the 'FEEST' begin! 🎉 I had the honor of cutting the cake with the wonderful @bjorkniels to celebrate the kick-off of @hollandopera 's latest production. I’ll be taking the stage as Ben! Week one of rehearsals is almost done, and it’s already turning into a deeply moving family drama. Yesterday I sang my final notes of the season in Simon Boccanegra. Somehow pace per lui (peace for him) felt like the perfect ending, because after this season I'm definitely ready for some peace myself. It's been a crazy year. Nine productions, teaching over 30 students, workshops, auditions, coaching, studying... so much to be grateful for. I still can't believe I get to do this for a living. At the same time, freelancing has a way of making you feel like you always have to say yes. The fear of missing out on work, falling behind, or becoming less visible is real. This season has reminded me that finding balance is just as important as working hard. So I'm off travelling for a few weeks. My next score is coming with me, because rehearsals start almost as soon as I'm back. One hour of studying a day, the rest is for exploring, resting and recharging. A huge thank you to everyone who was part of this season. Right in the middle of the Passion period, but I wanted to share this already for a practical reason… This September I’ll be performing in a brand new opera, Feest, a “Scandi thriller opera” by @hollandopera . And if you’re thinking of coming, now is the moment: there’s a 25% early bird discount when booking in March. In Feest I’ll be playing Ben, the personal trainer (💪😅) of the main character Anna, in what unfolds as an intense family drama. I received the libretto yesterday and I’m genuinely excited. What makes it extra special is that the role and music feel unmistakably written for me. You can already sense it in every line and phrase, which is a rare and beautiful feeling. It may still feel far away, but I would love to see some familiar faces in September or October 🤍 But first, back to the Passions, and to Die Passagierin and Simon Boccanegra at @nationaleoperaballet . This week I had the privilege of stepping into the role of Christ six times in Matthäus Junior. Six full houses heard and saw the Easter story as if for the very first time. Nine years ago I first helped bring this beautiful production to life, in what were actually my very first performances as a professional. It feels very special that it has grown into a tradition, and that next year we will celebrate our 10-year anniversary. What makes it even more meaningful is that we are still performing it with most of the original cast. It is such a strong and warm team, one where we truly support each other and can rely on one another. @heleenvegter_liedpianist @leonvanlieretenor @davetenkatecountertenor @ingemudlerr @jurjenroest @jacquesriebeek @anweralhussein Another thing that makes it extra special for me is that my very best friend @mirthedokter stands beside me in this production. Facing the crowd together is the best feeling. She supports me not only on stage as Christ, but also every day beyond it. This year it felt especially confronting to embody Christ, because I am now 33, the same age he was when he died. It’s been an intense few weeks: countless rehearsals in so little time. I’ve almost been more Zuniga than myself lately! But we did it: our first four performances of Carmen were a great success! It’s been such a joy to dive into this role, exploring Zuniga’s character through both music and drama, alongside these special colleagues from opera houses across Ukraine. The season has been well underway for a while now. In my case, this meant being far too busy to keep social media updated on what I’ve been up to. I’ve truly loved performing in all the productions of Tosca at Dutch National Opera. Rehearsals for Semele are already in full swing, and next week I’ll begin working on a brand new Carmen with the Ukraine Chamber Opera, where I’ll make my debut as Zuniga. We’ll be touring across the country with twenty performances: plenty of chances to come see it! This year, I’ll also be singing as a soloist again in a beautiful New Year’s concert, this time with Orchestra Excelsior. March brings no less than ten performances of the St. Matthew Passion, in which I’ll perform both the role of Christus and the arias. The season will wrap up with my dear friends at Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, with Simon Boccanegra. I’m truly looking forward to the rest of this wonderful season and feeling very grateful for all the opportunities coming my way. 🌕✨ Time to shine a light on a truly special student. Ten years ago, fresh out of music theatre school, I met @empdamen . She had just performed somewhere, felt the spark, and decided to go all in. We made a plan, worked on her voice, monologues, and everything she’d need to turn this dream into a career. From day one, her drive was unstoppable. Talent is common, but her determination made the difference. Year after year, setback after setback, she kept pushing. When one door closed, she found another and opened it herself. Yesterday was a milestone: I witnessed the premiere of Luna, an epic open-air spectacle in the stone quarry of Winterswijk. Els created the concept, wrote the script, and directed the entire production. It was sharp, moving, funny, intelligent: unmistakably her. With a cast of many (including the incredible @suzanseegers and @aniekvenhoeven ), she lit up the stage and the sky. Els, I’m endlessly proud of you.
