“The Butthole Surfers legendary live shows were the ultimate communal art spectacle, and I strived to make a film that would capture that experience,” says Stern. “The festival screenings we’ve done around the world were phenomenal, so I’m super excited Alamo Drafthouse is making it possible for audiences to see it together.”
The film tells a story spanning more than forty years using rare archival footage, cutting-edge animation, and surreal reenactments. It also features exhaustive interviews with the band members, as well as admirers and collaborators, including Richard Linklater, Flea, Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones, Henry Rollins, and Ice-T. �“I’d rank it amongst the great music docs of all time,” says Richard Linklater, director and co-founder of Austin Film Society. ”It captures the anarchic/DaDa spirit of this legendary band. Paul Leary is a musician and record producer best known as the lead guitarist and vocalist for the experimental rock band @buttholesurfers. Tom Stern is a filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer who directed the new documentary about the band called “Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt”.

Our chief critic @portlyadolescence spoke with Paul and Tom ahead of the film’s premiere at Beyond Fest in Chicago about the origins of the documentary, its unique style, reuniting the band, and more.
