Wow, caught Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan–ATLAS flying over Boulder last night. What an incredible sight! A comet cruising through the Boulder night sky, with the Rockies looking all majestic as usual.

This was such a fun moment. Definitely one for the books. 🌌✨

A few frames from Canyonlands and Arches, two of my favorite places on earth to chase the light.

1. That’s me on the edge in Canyonlands, waiting as the light poured through the clouds
2. Double Arch catching the last glow of the day
3. Fins on fire, with the snowy La Sals behind
4. Framed by sandstone, looking out over the valley

The secret to mornings and evenings like these? Sleep close to the light. Green River Overlook in Canyonlands and Devils Garden in Arches both made my list in “Five Places to Sleep Close to the Light,” now live in ASPECT Issue 01.

I’ve been working on something new, and today it’s finally here.

Introducing ASPECT, a field journal about the places we go, the light we chase, and what they leave with us.

For years, my photographs have done most of the talking. But a print on a wall only shows the moment the light came through. It doesn’t show the hours of searching, the alarms set long before dawn, the mornings that came up empty, or the ones that made it all worth it.

That’s the story I wanted to tell. So I built a home for it.

ASPECT is original photography, destination guides, misadventures, and the stories behind the prints. Slow by design. Made with care. Better when saved and shared.

Issue 01 is live now, with four mornings in Islamorada, a photographer’s guide to Monument Valley, five places to sleep close to the light, and a letter on why I started it all.

Happy Halloween by @tomkingsford

Some places glow brighter after everyone else goes home. Chapel on the Rock at St. Malo.

Nights like this are why I keep going back out. That’s the heart of [ ASPECT ]: the places we go, the light we chase, and what stays with us long after we’ve come home.

Field Journal Nº 01 lands November 1.

Most people head inside when the storm rolls in. I set up the tripod.

One long exposure above Boulder. The city lights hum below, the Flatirons go black against the foothills, and then the sky splits open over the Front Range. You wait in the dark for one flash, and the waiting is the whole point.

That’s what [ ASPECT ] is about: the places we go, the light we chase, and what it all leaves with us long after we’ve come home.

Field Journal Nº 01 lands November 1. That’s two days.
