TOMRA Food designs and manufactures sensor-based sorting machines and integrated post-harvest solutions for the food industry

POSTS STORIES REELS

We talk a lot about food wasted in our kitchens. We talk far less about the food that never gets there. Around the world, about 1 in 7 of all harvested food is lost before it reaches the shops, says the United Nations.

Not in fridges, but in fields, stores and processing plants. Sorting is one of the few steps where every single piece of food is checked. An optical sorter looks at each piece and, in a split second, sends it where it belongs: packed for the shops, processed into products like juice or preserves, or taken out. Get that decision right, and good food stays good food. Get it wrong, and it's lost along with the bad.

Cutting the food lost after harvest is one of the UN's goals for 2030. Better sorting is part of how we get there. World Ecology Day usually puts forests and oceans in the spotlight. But every harvest draws on water, soil and energy too. When food is lost, so is everything it took to grow it.

Do you know what one rotten potato could cost you?

Over $2 million. 😮

Here's why it adds up so fast.

One rotten potato can start a hot spot in your store. The rot spreads to the potatoes next to it, the heat builds, and the rot spreads even faster. In a warm, damp store with poor airflow, it can break down a whole store in just a few days.

A 10,000-ton store holds over $2 million worth of potatoes. That's a lot riding on one bad potato.

Our tip: keep your store below 50°F (10°C). That's where the bacteria behind this rot slow right down.

And on November 5? We've got some bad news for bad potatoes. Watch this space. 👀
