U21S NEARLY SHOCK BRADFORD CITY 💪 Newcastle United U21 played top of League One Bradford City yesterday in the EFL Trophy. After grabbing the lead, unfortunately the lads suffered a comeback and lost 2-1. Despite this, there were plenty of impressive performances. Initially struggled against experienced defenders and has to learn to not get pinned so easily. In transition, his more clunky movement combined with how isolated he was meant that the team struggled to break out of the pressure. Even though this was the case, he put himself about well in the channels in moments and showed good strength on occasion. Despite these struggles, he had some good first touches and link-up play, grabbed the assist for Matheos Ferreira, and had a brilliant moment where he beat two men on the edge of the box, and unfortunately had his shot blocked by a defender around the 6 yard box. For my first real watch, it’s clear he has an impressive striker profile who just needs to be platformed well and not have too much transition work expected of him. Matheos Ferreira (RW) - another impressive showing from the forward who once again grabbed another goal with a smashing strike from around 20 yards out. Ballstriking really is his strength, he also has that low driven shot across goal in his locker. Thought he dealt with this match much better physically than another game I watched earlier this season against another mens team, put himself about well and did some great defensive work. A forward who has a very bright future ahead of him - a bit more physical development to take contact well and I think you’re looking at an incredibly versatile attacker. Jayden Kouossu (CM) - Very recently made his U21 debut at 16 years old and it’s clear why. Jayden physically is so impressive - he takes contact so well and players bounce off him. Only came on in the 72’ by @tomtalkstoon

🚨 NEWCASTLE U18s SECOND IN THE LEAGUE 📊 Newcastle United currently sit 2nd of the PL North after winning 15 points from a possible 18, only losing to Manchester United in a game in which the squad was quite depleted. Two key standouts for the side so far are both Alfie Seldon, who has 4 goals and 2 assists, and Alfie Hutchison who has 6 goals and 3 assists. One player to keep an eye on is new recruit Christian Boothe, a lanky defensive midfielder who is tidy on the ball, agile, and reads the game very well. 🚨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 FOUR ENGLAND U18 CALLUPS FOR NUFC ACADEMY - Who are they? 📝⤵️ 1 - Roman Dowell (GK): Roman Dowell has massively impressed in recent weeks, particularly against York when he kept Newcastle in the game which led to our victory. Has been training with the first team this week and has a massive ceiling with his quick reflexes. 2 - Sam Alabi (CM): Sam Alabi recently returned from injury and has scored for the U18s and been getting U21 minutes. He’s captained England youth sides and is known for his similarity to Paul Pogba due to his ability to do a bit of everything as an all-action midfielder. 3 - Michael Mills (LW): Mills has recently trained with the first team and is likely to be involved in tonight’s squad against Hull in the Premier League. He’s direct and has an explosive burst of pace which makes it very hard to defend against him. Scored his first U21 goal last year which can be found on both my Instagram and my YouTube @TomTalksToon. 4 - Kyran Thompson (RW): Recently signed from Arsenal, the winger has made a very positive start to life on Tyneside. Just this week he scored and assisted against League Two opposition in York. The forward is brilliant on the half-turn and had been chased by the club previous to him signing at Arsenal. 📝 OUSMANE DIABATE SCOUTED: Newcastle United announced the signing of the Guinea midfielder recently, and after seeing the reaction of his Turkish club’s fans, I had to find out why they were so gutted to lose him for a fee as small as ~£3m. He can intercept passes and win defensive ground duels that others simply cannot due to his increased reach. Diabate has a really quick turning circle and one thing I loved when watching him is how his first instinct is ALWAYS to play forwards. He’s confident in his passing range and as soon as he sees his pass, it’s already left his boot. This is massive in Jaissle ball as it’s an incredible vertical trait, helping his team to progress up the pitch as quickly as possible. Like seriously, look at this pass. Again, he’s just received it and instantly he gets his head up, sees a very difficult pass and just trusts himself to deliver. Line splitting pass in behind a defender to get his teammate 1 on 1 with the keeper. Jaissle’s dream. On top of his passing ability, gangly frame, another massively important attribute that you cannot buy is pace. Diabate has it in abundance. Look at this recovery run he makes to stop an almost-certain goal. This, in combination with his duel winning legs, makes for an incredibly good defensive profile. Overall, when combining his defensive profile and his on the ball game, you have yourself a brilliant defensive midfield profile. It’s worth noting he’s only 18 and he’s already played for his country, and dropped masterclasses against some of the biggest clubs in Turkey. This is a player who when he returns to NUFC next season, it feels he’ll be ready to be part of the squad. A brilliant signing by the club, and another reason to be excited about NUFC 2.0. 📝 WINGER WONDERKID TRAINS WITH FIRST TEAM: Yesterday Michael Mills (17) was pictured training during Matias Fernandez-Pardo’s first session. So, who is he? Signed at 14y/o from Port Vale for somewhere between £100-200k, Michael Mills is a LW by trade, with a great physical profile (good pace, change of direction speed, size). He’s direct and likes to take a man on off the left. He to me so far seems more effective in the half-space, rather than as a touchline winger. He senses opportunities in the box and is good at arriving at the back post when his opposition winger/wingback are about to deliver (as seen in Slide 3). He scored his first U21 goal last season against Fulham (as seen in Slide 2). Recently however, he’s played as a RW due to Trevan Sanusi/Seung-Soo Park both being LWs. I’ve watched him play this role twice, and I’d say he’s struggled to have big impact in either game, this is normal and can sometimes be used to help wingers learn, like when Sanusi got lots of gametime at RW which I felt helped him learn to be more efficient with his actions. To iterate, he’s been fine in both games and has still had impressive moments, but for me it’s clear he’s better and more comfortable on the left when I’ve watched him. An impressive wing product who will get lots of gametime with the U21s this season you’d imagine, and one to definitely keep an eye on. 📝 BRAZILIAN WINGER AT NUFC?!? Matheos Ferreira was born in Ashington, but also has eligiblity for both Italy and Brazil. He’s a winger who can play off either side who was playing consistently for the U21s as a 17y/o. When playing on the right, he often uses his low centre of gravity and close-control dribbling to take the ball down the byline and deliver low-driven or lofted crosses into and around the 6 yard box, which he does well. He can also come inside and whip shots into the corner with his weaker left foot, which was seen against Spennymoor Town in pre-season. On the left, he looks more often to beat his man and go beyond them. I think he needs more time in the academy before a loan in all honesty, after seeing him struggle physically at times against a mens team in Tamworth in the National League Cup.
