Happy soulful birthday to my dad. Such a selfless guy, he rarely remembered his birthday was coming up, was more focused on his family. My dad treated me with truly UNCONDITIONAL selfless love. He took me golfing 1000s of times, never golfed in his life. He drove me to practices, games, meets, drove to watch me compete in college XC, the highest level of Spikeball, and just to go watch me shoot hoops, or hit a tennis ball at a wall. He practiced my spelling words with me every morning. If I had holes in my shoes he’d buy me new ones. He saved my childhood best friends life. One of 12 or so siblings, he grew up moving from relative to relative, children’s homes, got thrown in the American River by his brothers to learn to swim. He roofed from age 18 to a week before he passed on October 6th 2024 at 83. As a young man tried to go into the Marines, but they were full, & roofing paid more than PG&E. He owned his roofing business with his brother, Witt Bros Roofing, in north Sacramento. He did everything he could to make sure I didn’t have to fall back on roofing like he did. But I have to say, some of the best moments of my life were roofing with my dad, riding in his truck to & from work as a kid, listening to @knbr like it was our job. The sound of a roofing ladder rattling on a truck bed is a hallucinogenic sound to my soul. I never had to wake up to an alarm as a kid, my dad would make the walk upstairs with his cadence making the floor creak at the same places each walk up, to utter the words, “Tomer, it’s that time.” He was the only person who encouraged me to move out of bad places, to bring me well water from home when I lived in the city with tap water. I was so scared to leave home at 18, my dad would come down to Carmichael every Monday evening, stay with me, go to Olive Garden and just hang. I even took him to a XC team dinner with my college teammates, I didn’t think anything of it until my asst coach asked, why did your dad come? He was visiting and it didn’t even cross my mind to not bring him. We didn’t need to say anything, we just loved sharing space and time. The hardest working human I have ever met. The words we speak and the energy behind them have a massive impact on us and others and … the world. Forgiveness of self, gratitude & patience are skills that need to be worked on as a human, hard at first but after a while it feels like what we are naturally supposed to do. Wild. Happy 72nd to my mom! I am grateful for the time spent outside with and example of daily exercise she helped set for me as a kid! I never understood why it was so hard to get people to go for walks & now I realize it’s because of the example of my elders set, that it was NORMAL to me! I am grateful for the time we spent going to grandpa and grandmas in Walnut Creek, a huge culturing experience for me as an only child from the rural mountains! I am grateful for the games of catch, the ‘tennis’ rallies at Pioneer Pak, getting a frosty and popcorn at Rainbow Viseo & eating it on the front steps, kicking a nice fresh pine cone down the road on a walk! I am grateful that we have both worked to improve our relationship, hard times are inevitable, and people make mistakes, change. Forgiveness of others and even more important, yourself! The best time to plant a tree was yesterday, next best time is today. I didn’t give up and neither did she, when we could have easily just held anger and grudges … but chose love & family!
