New on Tone List: fox terrier by @jlfeakes

14 tracks of solo free-folk guitar improvisations, building on Jameson's 2022 release 'do a good deed every day'.
Available in a limited run of 30 C-90 cassettes containing both albums.

Out now on Bandcamp, with an album launch on December 2 at Ah Um.

From the artist:

'fox terrier' is a continuation of a practice of daily folk improvisations that I first presented in 2022's 'do a good deed every day'. These two albums are very much siblings in that respect, which is why I felt it appropriate to create a physical release that brings them together.

While the improvisations in 'do a good deed' felt searching or meandering, 'fox terrier' by feels comparatively self-assured. What I ended up with sounds surprisingly compositional to me.

From @not.drewkrapljanov:

”The seemingly parallel lines between performer and listener now form a double helix. Much like the two albums ago of ‘do a good deed everyday’ from 2022, the moment you decide to press play on ‘fox terrier’, you will find yourself thrust into a world of harmonic possibility. Like the held breath from a camera flash, these moments in time arouse curiosity and conjure surprise, materialising and evolving like dormant dreams that have awoken by a familiar sense. With each of the album’s 14 tracks comes a new piece to an ever-changing puzzle and a new way of listening. Listening not as an act but as a conversation between you, the artist and an expanding universe.”

Thrilled to announce @marcuswhaleinlandsea live at The Bird alongside @melaanija___ and Pure Rave (@mattdzp). Guest curated with @ben__aguero.

Marcus Whale's new album Nether blends IDM, bass music and a prismatic array of other influences, delivered in experimental song forms. Dark atmospherics and thrillingly complex polyrhythms drive songs touching on desire, horror and limbo.

Supported by two local performances exploring turnt up conceptually driven noise-DJing and hazy electronic songwriting.

Afternoon show, 3 til 6:30 on November 14.

Limited pre-sales available. Find these as well as accessibility information and more about each artist at our website (link in bio). by @tone.list

In tandem with this year's Sounding Together we have a number of wonderful interstate visitors in town.

Dale Gorfinkel works in rhythmic groups @chikchikaband and Prophets, multiple improvisation-driven projects, sound sculpture creation, and inclusive participatory music through @outhearsounds. His solo practice is often driven by invented or repurposed instruments, directing his overflowing musicality at anything he can get his hands on. For this set he will perform with a number of these instruments, making music that resembles modular synthesis or heavy analog drones, but mostly produced entirely acoustically through the use of balloons, springs, garden irrigation materials and resonators.

Sounding Together participant @ggabriellahill is an exciting young voice in Sydney's improvised music scene, operating between brainiac avant-jazz and tender free playing on tenor and soprano saxophones. Thrilled to host a solo set from her during her Boorloo visit.

And after a year of trying to book @elsamona___ between trips to the desert we finally succeed 🙃 Elsa is a local multi-disciplinary artist using dance and sound to work in the tension between brutality and tenderness, who will present a solo work with objects, voice, electronics and body.

Doors at 7:00pm at Fremantle Small Projects (rear of Victoria Hall, 179 High St, Walyalup). Tickets, accessibility info and more about the artists on our website (link in bio).

Back by popular demand 💪

I think that was the best live performance I've ever seen" -punter at Will's 2025 show at underscore

Will Guthrie's solo performances on drum kit channel the rhythmic swagger of underground hip hop, the cycling polyrhythms of Carnatic and Gamelan music, and the hectic energy of free jazz and noise into a captivating and singular approach. After an undeniable solo set in December 2025 we are pleased to bring him back to the west coast. @willwillguthrie

Will is joined by Failing Upwards, whose jarringly brilliant performances of bleak post-conceptual non-music are a beacon of hope for local sound culture as much as they unsettle music and listening generally. @flailing.untoward

Tuesday Oct 27, doors 7.30pm at @ode_to_sirens, tickets on sale now ($35, $25 or pay-what-you-can, no booking fees).

Dinner & drinks are available from the Ode to Sirens main bar throughout.

Wheelchair accessible venue, check our website for more thorough access info, artist bios & more.

Thanks to everyone who came down for James Bradbury’s performance last night, the second collaboration between Tone List and Vessel.

From James:
‘I’m keen on the misadventures of machines that can “listen” and which can discover, in their own way, organisations of sound that are surprising and reflexive. I like to make music that is challenging and unrelenting, while also exploring liminal textures and forms. Ideally my computer sounds like a computer.’

Thanks to our 2026 event partners: Willoughby Park Wines, Otherside Brewing Co, Lightning Minds and Front Runner AV for your ongoing support.

Following the success of Tone List & Vessel’s collaboration last year, we wanted to do it again!

Vessel Contemporary and Tone List are proud to present an intimate session with composer, coder & electronic musician James Bradbury on Wednesday 2 September, from 7.30 - 9 pm. The concert takes place within Between Suns, a large scale, multi-media exhibition of nearly three decades of artworks by Khaled Sabsabi, also open from 1 - 7pm the same day.
We hope that the session allows audiences to engage deeper with the exhibition through another medium. People can dance or relax, close their eyes, and feel lost in cycles that may never resolve.

From James:
“I’ll be improvising using my laptop and working with some new pattern generation techniques. It’ll sit somewhere between gastric-sub-amorphous-rubber-banding and ultra-pointilistic-techno. I’ll also be remixing some older work as I go.

I’m keen on the misadventures of machines that can “listen” and which can discover, in their own way, organisations of sound that are surprising and reflexive. I like to make music that is challenging and unrelenting, while also exploring liminal textures and forms. Ideally my computer sounds like a computer.”

Bio:
James Bradbury is a creative-coder and sound artist from Boorloo/Perth, active in Tone List’s program since 2016. In the last few years, he has been interested in building digital tools for devising musical structures and exploring pattern generation. He has worked with the Fluid Corpus Manipulation project, released solo works on Superpang and tokinogake, and developed software with Rian Treanor & Mark Fell. He is currently a Lecturer of Music at the University of Western Australia.

Psych-jazz quartet I Hold The Lion's Paw return September 9 at @ah_um_restaurant 🔴 pres. by Tone List & @jadevisionjadevision

I Hold The Lion's Paw are a rhythmic avant-garde ensemble. They conjure the spirit of the twisted funk of Miles Davis' On The Corner, Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time and Jon Hassell. They make a bendy, indescribable music: atmospheric, trippy, virtuosic, sometimes goofy.

Join us for an intimate concert in Ah Um, an acoustically treated restaurant & listening bar in Northbridge, with DJ sets from jade//vision head honcho cash promise. (NB: kitchen will be closed)

Very limited capacity (40 tickets). Link in bio for those and more info.

IHTLP for this tour is:
Reuben Lewis - trumpet, electronics, synthesiser
Emily Bennett - voice, synthesiser
@helensvoboda_music - voice, electric bass
Ronny Ferella - drums

Ah Um is wheelchair accessible (but will be crowded as its small - please be conscious of mobility aid users navigating crowded events 💞) by @tone.list

Tone List and @wamuseum reunite once more to present Sun Returns, our annual sunrise concert series. 6.15am doors for a 6.30 start overlooking the eastern cityscape of Boorloo.

This time we will be gifted with a one-off durational set of ethereal songwriting and ambient exploration by the iconic Rabbit Island.

Tickets: $30/$25, link in bio. Free filter coffee by our sponsors @poundcoffee*

"Elf-queen, healer, general magic being". Spiritually loose forest-dweller Amber Fresh brings her intimate world to stages, satellite and vinyl as Rabbit Island, accompanied at times by members of internationally celebrated bands (*name drops*). Rabbit Island’s dream folk takes your hand and leads you on a deep journey, via pure commitment, to uncensored feeling... poetic lyricism and sonic exploration lapping at the edges. Released on Bedroom Suck and Badminton Bandit Records, Rabbit Island’s studio albums Deep in The Big and O God, Come Quick, draw out a wish, a tear, a prayer. Fresh's writing and home recordings are treasured by mossy fans scattered across the continents. Rabbit Island surfaces gently, occasionally, and usually on Noongar Boodjar, by whose graces and protection of Elders we all draw our next breath.
