10 years ago my brother and my friends Theo and Alex inspired me to start DJing and basically showed me the blueprint - they put me onto Joe Kay, Soulection, Kaytranada, Mura Masa, Minnie Riperton and the likes of Vince Staples, Smino and Anderson Paak. I’m talking 99.9%, Malibu, Blue Suede, Smoke and Retribution, Lotus Eater, Lovesick… these times none of us lived in a city so clubs and events weren’t too regular - instead we just linked up and talked music.

Around the same time my mum told me stories about an artist she loved and grew up with in the 80s. Recalling her Uni bedroom as a teenager, she had a poster on the wall of an album called Diamond Life. When I heard that album I understood the meaning of the word timeless. Her name was Sade Adu.

Fast forward to today, I have been building my own platform for 6 years inspired by these sounds and the places and people around me.

London is a cultural hub and I’m influenced by so many varying music styles. I’m naturally a very determined person and often hard on myself but this is because I’m pushing to learn more about the music I play, dig deeper into sounds and understand cultures with a deeper knowledge and respect.

10K followers is a milestone that I’m proud of and although I’m less and less focused on the numbers, I wanted to share something special for you. It’s a short 1 hour mix filmed in my flagship residency Global Tones, which has become one of the most popular RnB / Global Sounds events in London running 3 times a week all year.

i sat on this for two years because i wanted the edit to feel right. the ambience, the graphics, the pacing… life has been busy and it took a while to get round to editing this but it’s finally out and up on youtube so go check dat outttt

crazy seeing how far the house parties have come since these ones. shout out @alanhh3 for pushing the concept this far, and @farrago.uk every time. it was a pleasure being on the team when we started these.

@teeth_g styled me in some insane trousers, and the hoodie. still some of my favourite pieces i’ve worn…

mellow tones: vinyl album playback & audio workbook session

one thursday each month at the Triqis studio-showroom

mellow tones is a monthly vinyl album playback and audio workbook session designed for people who love great records, thoughtful listening and good company.

presented by Tone Central, each evening features three carefully selected albums, played front to back on vinyl. the music begins mellow and gradually builds in energy throughout the evening.

before each record, that month’s guest selector will give a brief introduction, sharing what makes the album resonate with them. then between each side when flipping the record, they’ll share additional context and history about the artist or record.

expect great music, considered listening and thought conversations in the relaxed, welcoming surroundings of the new Triqis studio-showroom.

this month, @louis.vellacott is kicking things off.

“to kick things off I wanted to start with three albums that anyone in my community would no doubt enjoy. An entry point to the mellow tones sound, if you will. I chose aaliyah to represent the female dna that runs through this sound… the young queen that was taken from us too soon. her timeless music lives on 25 years later.

I chose anderson .paak because that album truly was my favourite project as a teen and it reminds me of my friends and my brother and learning to dj.

lastly, I chose an album that I think is criminally slept on which is Bruno Mars‘s most recent project, full of back to back soulful dancing and uplifting music.”
