THE NICHOLSON RUGBY SHIRT

“The kind of painting which I find exciting is not necessarily representational or non-representational, but it is musical and architectural... Whether this visual relationship is slightly more or slightly less abstract is, for me, beside the point.“
- Ben Nicholson, Horizon, 1941

The Rugby Shirt is a quintessential piece of British kit with collegiate origins, and a staple of flexible leisurewear - able to stand in for an Oxford shirt under a sports coat or in place of a sweatshirt on a chilly evening.

This season we have made a quartered rugby shirt inspired by a board painted by British artist Ben Nicholson and on display in Cambridge’s wonderful Kettle’s Yard Gallery. Dating from 1933, this was a pivotal year for Nicholson, seeing him expand from his Cubist influences into more abstracted work inspired by Miro, Calder and his then new partner Barbara Hepworth. The very dramatic display of vibrancy anchored with a panel of deep black.

For manufacturers, we utilise the makers who supply the Oxbridge university teams and British Armed Forces, and employ their traditional baggy block. The body is a soft heavy gauge “Sportphlex’ cotton mix cloth - an early performance fabric developed in the 1950s, finished with white herringbone cotton twill placket, split side hems, knitted cuffs and rubber buttons.

The first 20 orders placed ship immediately, the remainder on the week of November 2nd.

- Made In England
- Traditional baggy fit
- “Sportphlex” cotton mix performance fabric
- Herringbone twill placket in natural unbleached cotton
- Knitted cuffs
- Rubber buttons
- 2” split side hems
- Machine wash cold and line dry

THE COTTON COMMANDO CAP (Polar White)

My favourite ever watchcap was not made of cashmere. It wasn’t made of merino wool. It was manufactured in injection molded plastic by Palitoy for their Action Man range in 1977. Unfortunately it was only made in 1:6 human scale.

All my adult life, this accessory made for the Commando, Mountain and Arctic outfits, set the bench mark for what I want from a watch cap. High, tight and with generous ribbing. I’ve owned hundreds over the years that came pretty close but I thought it was high time I recreated the model as best I could.

Made in England in 100% thick cotton, the cap is comfy, breathable and washable. The first two colours, a polar off white and a deep black pay tribute to the original Action Man uniforms from the late 70s.

The cap is a trim 18cm length, meaning that a single roll will still cover the top of the ears, but the double roll sits snugly around the crown, in a similar fashion to our short flight berets.

The first 15 pieces ship this week, any extra orders from mid October.

- Made in England

- 100% Cotton

- Tight and trim 18cm length

THE DECK SOCK (GOLDENROD)

At AWMS, we pride ourselves on making the things we are actually looking for ourselves. Plugging the gaps in our wardrobes or reviving some long lost favourite we have searched in vain to replace.

Our deck sock is a soft top slouchy ribbed sports sock that we have been hunting high and low for. Unlike a crew sock, the wide ribbing expends all the way to the toe, like a traditional English rugby sock. My school issued ones were purple and white hoop; but here they are in a goldenrod yellow.

This heavyweight chunky over-the-calf sock is made from 90% cotton, reinforced with 10% nylon, and made on a 1977 Bentley Komet sock machine from British spun cotton.

British made in the heart of Leicestershire, the sockmaking capital of England.

MEDIUM is suitable for UK sizes 6-9

LARGE is suitable for UK sizes 9-12
