Snippets from the watery first part of “Can’t hold a thrum without spilling it” – a site-specific performance developed in collaboration with @newborin_ 💦🌱

So immensely proud of this work and process that unfolded across different parts of @kunstfortbijvijfhuizen and used different wind instruments as extensions of breath, puppets as extensions of arms and legs, the pond as an extension of emotions. We waded, crawled, climbed, and sounded our way through different spaces – letting intensity spill out in more than words.

I am deeply grateful to @newborin_ who developed the performance with me and gave it so much – voice, breath, body, warmth, brilliance, presence. What an extraordinary performer and person you are!

Thank you to @kunstfortbijvijfhuizen for the time and space to develop this performance, and for including my work in the exhibition “When the Animals Still Spoke”. To Rabiaâ Benlahbib for the invitation, and to Manon Schreurs @manonsense for your support throughout this process.

Snippet from 𝓉𝑜𝓌𝒶𝓇𝒹 𝒶𝓃 𝓊𝓃𝒹𝓊𝓁𝒶𝓉𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓅𝓇𝑒𝓈𝑒𝓃𝓉, already two weeks ago now, at @neverneverland_amsterdam – I’m still swooning.

Fire starting was the first gesture that joined this work – when I still thought of it as a series of gestures and objects rather than a composition.

Two performers ceremonially prepare a wooden horn – decorating, vocalizing, binding it – then seal it shut. The horn will not be played.

✨Op 22 oktober opent de nieuwe solotentoonstelling van @tonibrell in Pleinkamer! Kom langs tussen 17:00 - 20:00 uur voor een avond vol kunst en performance.

👂In ‘Almost a Polyphony’ brengt Toni Brell een nieuw
oeuvre samen dat bestaat uit geluidsobjecten, een
partituur, keramieken tegels en videofragmenten.
De tentoonstelling komt voort uit artistiek
onderzoek naar luisteren en de relaties tussen
geluid, materiaal en het lichaam.

📯Brell creëert sculpturen die het midden houden
tussen instrumenten en verlengstukken van het
lichaam. De sculpturen worden deels gevormd door
Brells ervaring met neurodivergentie: voor Brell is
luisteren een lichamelijke ervaring, waarbij er niet
alleen aandacht is voor wat er te horen is, maar
ook voor trillingen en de manier waarop geluid via
aanraking wordt waargenomen.

🗣️Het woord ‘almost’ (bijna) in de titel verwijst naar
momenten waarop een polyfonie haar continuïteit
verliest: geluiden aarzelen, herhalen zich, raken
uit de maat of sluiten niet helemaal op elkaar
aan. In deze tussenruimtes blijven betekenis en
onderlinge verhoudingen open; ze verschuiven en
transformeren. Welke vormen van expressie worden
mogelijk wanneer communicatie zich niet hoeft te
bewijzen via taal en de sprekende stem?

De expo loopt t/m 27 november en is dagelijks te bezichtigen tussen 13:00-17:00, m.u.v. di- en zondag.

Op 7 november verzorgt de kunstenaar een workshop tijdens museumnacht van 13:00-17:00.
Meld je aan voor de workshop door te mailen naar hi@tonibrell.de met je naam en ‘Workshop Toni’ als onderwerp.

Op 27 november is er een finissage van 17:00-20:00, met performances.

Pleinkamer wordt gecureerd door Olga Ganzha. Deze tentoonstelling werd mede mogelijk gemaakt met steun van @afk020, @mondriaanfonds, @fonds_kwadraat, @amartefonds en @mensenmakenamsterdam🙏

We begin to suspect that this nurse-nest is really a larynx, a hollow organ brooding a clutch of unhatched cries.

It’s been a brimming summer, spilling into a lush autumn. Works colliding, fertilizing, thickening one another in ways I couldn’t have foreseen or known to hope for. A few snippets from works in progress for my upcoming solo show at Pleinkamer @the_bookstorefoundation opening on october 22, an upcoming performance with @ensemblemodelo62 during Sound or Not Festival and a new videowork that is currently in the crispy-crunchy space of almost, but not-quite.

Stoneware horn, made during my residency at Albe. Hard to understand that it’s already been a year.
Bonus images: some atmosphere from this dreamy / weird / warm / lovely and complicated place. A place that was, of course, full of people - but I don’t feel comfortable sharing faces on this cursed platform without explicit consent, so you’ll have to make do with an unreasonable number of selfies.

I learned so much during that time. Very grateful that I got to spend almost two months there; still thinking through and working with many of the things that started then. taken in Albe VZW by @tonibrell

I am grateful, happy, relieved, and humbled to share that my practice (and, by extension, my flesh, my brain, and all my demons) will be supported over the next four years through the @mondriaanfonds Kunstenaar Basis grant. What an honour.

Four years to follow the threads that feel so urgent: folk performance, enchanted sounds, haunted listening, what music does in the body, and the ways sound and song are intertwined with experiences that fall outside normative perception – states often described as mental illness or madness.

This work begins with my own experience, but it doesn’t end there. The obsessive, gut-wrenching, ghostly, unpleasantly-pleasant sounds I wish to produce are ways of conjuring other narratives than the one I so often encountered within systems of care: to get well. If being well means returning to the rhythms of work and productivity - or, as one therapist once said to me, “Make no mistake, my goal is to make you employable again.” - then I find myself searching elsewhere: in sounds that refuse reason; in folk songs; in dancing with devils; in listening with all the strange ears of my body; in affective landscapes; in the companionship of demons, tricksters, and shadows.

Here’s to four more years of singing, blowing, scratching, tapping, knocking, and whatever else might come.

1+1 OPEN CALL RESULTS 🎉

We are delighted to announce the results of the first edition of the ‘1 Plus 1’ Open Call: we will be awarding two commissions!

Lawrence McGuire and Toni Brell have been selected to develop their projects and present them during the second edition of the SOUND OR NOT Festival.

We received a large number of strong proposals and our jury spent considerable time reading and discussing each one. This wasn't an easy decision — with 66 entries and only 2 places, we had to leave behind many proposals we genuinely liked. We looked at feasibility, clarity, the collaborative angle, and artistic quality, and found many of the ideas to be very strong and exciting.

Congratulations to Lawrence and Toni! We can’t wait to see what you’ve created!
