Turns out, an idea at the dining table can take over your life a little bit. Five months ago Tonic & Root was something we were experimenting with at home. Since then we’ve tested blends on friends, our running club, my hairdresser @scullyscully_hair and even a few sailors somewhere mid Atlantic. We’ve registered our kitchen as a food business, earned our 5 food hygiene rating, written more SOP’s than we knew existed and somehow built a brand in between. Now we’re getting ready to launch. Tonic & Root started from a pretty simple idea: small rituals can make busy days feel a little steadier. We’re nearly ready to share what we’ve been building. Ten days in, the Discovery Set has been your favourite way to start. We’ve had some really lovely feedback on the blends, and one thing people keep mentioning is something we hadn’t expected: the tea filters. Quite a few of you are completely new to loose leaf, so apparently that little addition mattered more than we realised. Seven months building a herbal tea brand. Then we got to pack our first actual orders. These were ordered on Sunday, packed on Monday and are now making their way into kitchens around the country. Being good at Canva and knowing what you like is not the same as knowing how to build a brand. I learnt this after attempting to brand Tonic & Root myself, with a lot of Canva and a little too much faith in Chat GPT. Then, on a 3 hour drive to a hen weekend in Weston-super-Mare, my friend Bridie showed me a brand designer she’s shortlisted for her own business. Bridie’s another ex-yachtie, now building House of Niche, and apparently very good at doing my research for me. The designer was Lara at Studio OAX. I thought working with a brand designer would mostly mean making my ideas look better. Instead, the process made us get much clearer on what Tonic & Root was, what it wasn’t and what actually belonged. Before you make a brand look coherent, you have to make the ideas coherent. Lara took all of that and developed the identity we have now. Taking the aesthetics somewhere I knew I wanted to go, but couldn’t have got to myself. Very glad a hen weekend in Weston-super-Mare somehow led us to Portugal. The big light is fine until suddenly it absolutely isn’t. Lamps on. Candles lit. Same room, completely different situation. Which isn’t entirely in our heads. How bright or warm a light is and where it comes from can all change how we feel in a space. The firelight bit is interesting too. Anthropologist Polly Weissner found that, among Ju/‘hoansi communities, conversations around fires after dark were much more@likely to turn to stories and social life than daytime conversations. After drinking the same six teas for months, I genuinely had no idea if they were still good. So we started giving them to other people, quite a lot of other people. Some feedback made us change things. Some confirmed what we already thought. And sometimes people loved something we weren’t expecting them to. Fresh and Let’s Go eventually became Rise. Revive became Recharge. Lights Out became Rest. After a lot of tea, a lot of opinions and a few slightly awkward moments, those are the three we’re launching on 27th September.
