A writing about skills, blessings, and a proud Latina.
For 28 years, here and there, as you may have seen, I’ve been involved with the Metropolitan Opera as one of the MET Actors. (We used to be called “supernumeraries”, until we finally were recognized for our numerous abilities and acting talents, and were relabeled as Met Actors.) In many operas, the Met Actors have played spoken or silent principle roles and have been included on the cast lists and marquees. And occasionally, we are asked to really stretch our skills at the Met.
Last month, I was thrilled to be invited to perform alongside the stars of the new exciting opera El Ultimo Sueño de Frida y Diego. This work explores the Mexican culture, art and relationship of Frida Kahlo with Diego Rivera. It is also a rare treasure sung in Spanish.
The iconic Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn hosted an outdoor concert with principles Isabel Leonard, Gabriella Reyes, Nils Wanderer, including an interview with the opera’s composer, Gabriella Lena Frank and Librettist Nilo Cruz. And here’s the kicker- I was asked, as a Mexican representing Met Actor, to read excerpts from Frida Kahlo’s journal. I was given Frida’s excerpts to perform in English and in Spanish. I am not a fluent Spanish speaker! But I have portrayed Frida in many schools as part of @thelivingmuseumcompany, and I knew my grandfather would turn over in his grave if I did not take this opportunity to represent his proud heritage. So I took a deep breath and walked out onto the stage after the glorious performances and held the few hundred people strewn across the hillsides captive for 16 minutes. I begged my ancestors to hold me close and make their voices heard as I spoke their native language. Phew! It went well.
And those are the kind of moments the Met Actors have. So tonight, I’m Dame #3 in Turandot on a stage of 250 people making another glorious night for the audience. It’s the joy of being a part of the MET. So don’t underestimate the spear carriers onstage, they have talents they have or have yet to explore! And for lots of laughs backstage follow @metoperaactors! Toi Toi Toi to all the performers tonight and @metopera for diversity! by @tonimichellerubio

This weekend was the 40th Anniversary of the class of 1986 and we have the same rambunctious energy now as we had then! What is it about a high school reunion that keeps us coming back? Why do reunions feel so good?

The halls and stairways of Good Counsel Academy hold a certain magic that’s hard to describe to anyone who didn’t walk them. The friendships we forged under the guidance of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion weren’t just childhood connections; they were the architecture of our lives. Our personal characters were born out of the enduring influence of GCA’s mission and the friendships we made during those formative years. One of the reasons these friendships have stood the test of time is the sheer volume of shared experiences that are “uniquely GCA”. Those moments created a bond that is impossible to replicate later in life. What we shared most deeply was support. There were laughter and tears as we navigated the transitions from girlhood to womanhood. A deep trust from the unspoken understanding we built over countless hours spent together.
And Acceptance: Our classmates knew us before the world told us who to be. Those were the friends who saw our purest selves, before life got loud and complicated. No pressure, no filters, just loyalty, laughter, and the bond that grows up with you. Childhood friends don’t just hold your memories, they hold a part of you that still feels like home. We saw eachother at our best and our worst, and we loved each other for exactly who we were.
Reuniting is a gift where we see the true testament to lifelong friendships. It is the ability to pick up right where we left off, regardless of how much time had passed. Thank you to the Sisters of the Divine Compassion and our teachers and to Rosie Hintz, Laura Ennis, Marie Duncan, Ana Maria Blaquez and Martha Pena and Kathryn Maher for creating this reunion beautiful weekend ! Ok folks- I’ve been a little quiet working on a few things. You may have seen this coming and now I have this ready to go for 2026! It is fun for schools, students, teachers, and parents! Take a look:
The Living Museum by the Living Museum Company
Elementary schools become Museums where students walk around as professional actors from world stages become “exhibits of history”; interacting with students to understand their inspiration and contributions to our world.

Why bring LMC to students this Spring?
LMC celebrates students diverse heritages!
LMC enhances curriculum with immersive programs!
LMC provides opportunities for funding with great impact to your school community!
LMC transports students viscerally into history!
Students will remember this inspirational experience long after their school days.
Check out our website at www.livingmusecompany.com

Sound cool? It’s so much fun to see students and teachers join in each exhibit! If you are an educator or parent and would like a museum at your school let me know!
