Yall loved seeing papa smile so here he is again! :) My dad has been through a lot, but he never stopped believing that joy is the key to it all. I’m glad he held on to it even when times got rough. More importantly I think that all of our parents hold this same belief of joy. It just takes them some time to finally learn how to show it and embrace it.

It’s hard to put into words everything that I feel seeing my dad healing and smiling. Growing up with an immigrant dad who went through war was not easy. As I got older, I realized that I will never understand what he had to go through. I can’t imagine what the pain and the burden of war has done to my parents, but I have come to know that they are trying their best. Even in the midst of the struggles, I now know that my dad was trying his best. He was trying his best to carry it all so that none of us would have to. Thinking back now that I’m older, what if I grew up with that mindset instead of hating him for his anger and resenting him? What if I was understanding and gave him space to say “Dad I’m sorry for what you went through but you are here now and you are safe with us”? How much more likely would it have changed him earlier to let his guard down and fight those demons on his back. We will never know but what I do know is that I have NOW. I have now to see and to love this version of him. The version that he probably was before his country was war torn and he had to endure and see people he love killed and taken away. This version of him is finally healing and thats all that matters. If you have immigrant parents, I know it’s hard, but just know there is a deep pain there thats hard for them to ignore.
