They are known as Sea Clowns and are as agile underwater as they are in the air!Puffins are known for their lifelong partnerships, which sounds rather romantic, but it’s really more about their habit of coming back to the same nest each year! They renew their bond with a special courtship called billing. This involves two puffins turning their heads side to side and clattering their bills together!Puffins are very social birds and only nest where there are other puffins. So, starting a new puffin colony is a rare occurrence indeed.Puffins spend most of their time swimming on the surface of the sea. Their black markings and white belly are like camouflage. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill formed an elite fighting force, the Special Service Brigade (SSB), to conduct raids in German-occupied Europe.By autumn, over 2000 men volunteered for the SSB. The 12 units became known as Commandos and operated in all war theatres, including the Arctic, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.The Commandos disbanded after the war, but they led to the creation of the SAS (Special Air Service), SBS (Special Boat Service), the Royal Marines, and the Parachute Regiment.Back in 1947, it was decided to honour the commando’s sacrifice. Scotland was chosen since so many of them trained on its hills and moors. Its unique design consists of two 455-foot (138.7 m) lenticular iron trusses 100 feet (30.5 m) above the water and conventional plate-girder approach spans. Its total length is 2,187.5 feet (666.8 m). It carries the Cornish Main Line railway in and out of Cornwall and is adjacent to the Tamar Bridge, which opened in 1961 to carry the A38 road.The chief engineer of God’s Wonderful Railway, or Great Western Railway, Isambard Kingdom Brunel started surveying in 1848 and construction commenced in 1854. The first main span was positioned in 1857 and the completed bridge was opened by Prince Albert on 2 May 1859. The canal engineers thought this was necessary because they couldn’t make the next part of the canal watertight without it. Unusually it also has a swing bridge across the lock! Just a bit further south of the lock, Watling Street crosses the River Ouzel, which flows into the Great Ouse.
