What an amazing surprise birthday these lovely gents held for me. From left to right; Eric, David and Eric #throwback #boyfriends #lifetime by @tony.siress

Happy Father’s Day dad. I will never forget this day, it was the last time you and I spent a day together celebrating your 74th birthday - I offered to take you anywhere you wanted to go. Chicken fried steak at Chili’s is what you wanted - can’t take the country out of Gary #rip #fathersday #family #familytime by @tony.siress

And people wonder why my favorite word is F$&k, this is my grandma Viola and my grandpa Antonio back in 2020, oh yeah my nephew DJ too! by @tony.siress

At sixty-one, starting is not the hard part anymore. Choosing is. I have more ideas than decades left, so every candidate for my time runs through three questions: does it outlive me, does it need what only my specific scars could teach, and would I still choose it if it took the rest of the decade. Most ideas die at the first question, and I let them go without grief. The rare one that passes all three gets everything I have left.

A man once gave me something I could not pay back. Not the specific things, those do not matter, what matters is the shape of the gift: it was larger than any reasonable repayment, and he knew it when he gave it.

I asked him once, directly, what I owed him. He said: nothing. He said: when you can, do what I did for you, for someone else.

I did not fully understand it at seventeen. I understand it completely now. The only currency that debt ever accepted was forward.

Every team I gave a chance, every door I held open, every time I stayed when leaving was easier, that was the repayment. That is still the repayment. I am still paying it.

Anyone can show up to something that is already running. Walk in, take credit, photograph the upside. The rarer skill is walking into something broken, understanding it clearly, and staying until it works. Not until it is easy. Not until it looks good from the outside. Until it actually works, for the people depending on it. I have done this more than once. It is not glamorous work. It does not produce many good posts. It produces something harder to photograph: the knowledge that when things were genuinely broken, you were the person who stayed.

I have been a decade ahead of the conversation more than once. The architecture was right. The timing was wrong. And from the inside, being early feels exactly like being visionary. It has the same certainty, the same clean logic, the same conviction.

You only find out which one it was after the window closes. The lesson I carry is not that being early is bad. The lesson is that the market does not care about your timing. It cares about its own. Build for the long run, but know what the rent costs while you wait. The reel shows the vindication. Not the decade before it.

Ntoumanis and colleagues looked at seventy-three studies on motivation and behavior change, more than thirty thousand people, published in 2021. What they found was straightforward and worth sitting with.

Interventions that built autonomous motivation, doing the thing because you genuinely value it and call it yours, showed a meaningful effect on actual behavior. The guilt-and-pressure kind of motivation barely moved the needle at all.

The study is careful to note the link between motivation and behavior is associational, not proven cause and effect. But the pattern is consistent enough to act on. The shift is not complicated. Stop trying to shame yourself into a better outcome. Decide the outcome is yours and the work changes character. It stops feeling like a debt. It starts feeling like a direction.

There was a period when everything outside of work was falling apart. A relationship I could not fix. A grief I could not move. A silence I had caused and did not know how to break. I could not fix any of it. What I could do was go into a broken company and make it work. That is what I did. Not as escape, exactly. More like: I needed one domain where my effort produced a real result, and this was it. The work was not a cure. But it was ground under my feet when everything else was sand. Sometimes that is exactly enough.

I have watched people reach the number. The actual number, the one they said would be enough. And I have watched what happens next: a new number appears, slightly ahead, and the finish line relocates without ceremony. It is not weakness. It is how the game is designed. Comparison has no fixed finish line; it is a moving one, calibrated to whatever you just achieved. The only exit is choosing your enough before you arrive. A fixed point, decided in calm, that the market and the feed do not get to renegotiate.

Pick it now. Not when you get there. Now.

There was a night when a system I had built was tested in the most public way possible, thousands of people depending on it, enormous consequences if it failed. It did not fail. The backup came up in under a minute. Nobody in the room noticed, because it was seamless, and seamless was the whole point. There was no applause. There was no post. There was just the quiet fact that the work held. I drove home and I was one of two people on earth who knew what had happened that night. Some of the most important things you ever do will go completely unrecorded. Build them to that standard anyway.

Talsma and colleagues published a careful look at the self-efficacy research in 2018 and found something most motivational content will not tell you. The link between believing you can do something and actually doing it runs in both directions, but the stronger direction is from doing to believing, not the other way around. The confidence arrives after the repetitions, not before. Stajkovic's earlier work found the same pattern: moderate connection, stronger causal signal running from performance to self-belief. I have lived this. Every time I have waited to feel ready before starting, I waited too long. Every time I started before I felt ready, the readiness showed up somewhere around the third week. Start. The belief is on the far side of the work, not the entrance.
