Had the best time with these fantastic new friends, reading plays for @newarabamericantheater ‘s “Festival of New SWANA Plays!” It only took 40(ish) years, but I’m finally being appreciated/utilized for being an Arab in the American Theater world. Had the privilege of reading the part of “Husband” in @zeyyfawaz ‘s excellent new play, THE TENANTS; directed by @sherrinea ; and the role of “Ali” in @novidparsi ‘s amazing new play, PAINTING IN PUBLIC (also directed by Sherrine). FINAL CAST ANNOUNCEMENT: The Tenants by Zeyy Fawaz!

We have an all-star cast for our final performance of our Midwestern Festival of New SWANA Plays! Our June 6-7 festival will feature readings of six new plays by Midwestern SWANA playwrights.

PLAY SYNOPSIS: If you like psychological thrillers; this play is for you. If you like dramatized depictions of historical events; this play is for you too. A couple rents out part of their home to new tenants after falling on hard times. At first, the arrangement seems normal, friendly even. But soon after, the tenants begin to intrude: first physically, then psychologically, then existentially. What starts as strange becomes downright claustrophobic for both the actors and the audience in a surreal moving space that slowly gets under your skin. The line between owner and occupant blurs until we no longer know whose house it really is. How will it all end?

CAST ANNOUNCEMENT: Painting in Public by Novid Parsi

We have an all-star cast of actors lined up to bring “Painting in Public” by Novid Parsi to life! This play will be the second piece showcased in our Midwestern Festival of New SWANA Plays, a showcase of plays by six Midwestern SWANA playwrights, happening from June 6-7. Don’t miss your chance to see this amazing group of actors!

PLAY SYNOPSIS: Ali, an Iranian American data worker, and Betty, a Black American visual artist, are both reeling from loss when they find each other and fall in love. But can their love endure when Betty learns that Ali's ethnicity sometimes mysteriously changes?

Our discussion will be moderated by Arab American literature professor, Dr. Joseph Farag!
