We are double celebrating artist @tonyalbert and designer @evi_o for being awarded two @bestdesignawards Gold pins this year, one for Tony’s monograph ‘Not a Souvenir’ published by @thamesandhudsonau and another for the ‘After the Rain’ catalogue that Tony curated, published by @nationalgalleryaus

Judge’s comments on Not a Souvenir: A powerful editorial response that feels deeply connected to the artist’s practice. The use of Albert’s alphabet, disruptive typography and considered materiality creates a publication with real presence, character and intent.

Published by @thamesandhudsonau and @mca_australia coinciding with Tony’s show Not A Souvenir, we’d like to thank the jury for the inclusion and celebrate the team behind this landmark publication. Special thanks to @sullivanstrumpf who has supported this project from its inception.

WINNER 🥇 After the Rain was awarded gold in the Graphics: editorial and books category at the @BestDesignAwards in Aotearoa.

‘The rain-inspired grid, tactile details and thoughtful use of artist voices create a publication that feels both highly designed and deeply respectful of its subject,’ said the judges.

Congratulations to @tonyalbert, @evi_o, @evi_o.studio, the artists and the Gallery’s publishing team! taken in National Gallery of Australia, Canberra by @tonyalbert

I finally made it to the @mca_australia to see the @tonyalbert Not a Souvenir exhibition. This exhibition brings together Albert’s work across sculpture, photography, installation, painting, and assemblage. The exhibition takes inspiration from the MCA’s location on Sydney Harbour at Tallawoladah and the surrounding precinct, The Rocks – a significant site of early colonial contact, now synonymous with tourism and souvenir culture. It considers the commodification and misrepresentation of Aboriginal people and culture, both historically and today, while celebrating survival and cultural pride. taken in Museum of Contemporary Art Australia by @tonyalbert

The most extensive survey of Albert’s career to date, the exhibition brings together sculpture, photography, installation, painting, and assemblage alongside new commissions. Throughout these works, Albert transforms objects of prejudice into symbols of resistance and resilience.

Coinciding with this major survey exhibition, Sullivan+Strumpf presents a new solo exhibition of works by Tony Albert currently on view at our Gadigal/Sydney gallery. Find out more at the link in bio.

Continuing in the Gadigal/Sydney gallery, Tony Albert's 'Reverb' exhibits alongside 'By The Grace of God' in the upstairs gallery – an exhibition featuring works by Albert, Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre and the Hermannsburg Potters.

Experience the concurrent exhibitions before the 17 Oct 26 or online via the viewing room.

Drawing upon the vernacular of everyday Australia, Tony Albert subverts familiar expressions and cultural shorthand to turn colloquialisms back upon themselves, in a series of text-based works that explore how racism can reside within humour, nostalgia and seemingly innocuous everyday language.
In these works the past does not simply disappear. It echoes, travels, is reworked and returns, asking us to consider not only what we inherit, but what we choose to carry forward.

By The Grace of God features new works by Tony Albert and renowned artists from IltjaNtjarra (Many Hands) and the Hermannsburg Potters, an exhibition honouring Albert Namatjira and his enduring legacy. Bringing together painting, ceramics, glass and Albert's signature text-based assemblages, the exhibition explores the layered intersections of faith, cultural identity, history and artistic practice that Namatjira so powerfully embodied.

MCA’s @mca_australia exhibition Tony Albert: Not a Souvenir brings together Albert’s work across sculpture, photography, installation, painting, and assemblage alongside major new commissions.

Tony Albert @tonyalbert is one of Australia’s fearless and influential contemporary artists. Grounded in a longstanding practice of collecting found material, Albert reclaims popular images of Aboriginal Australia with wit, beauty and force. His assemblages of ‘Aboriginalia’ transform the visual language of colonisation, turning objects of prejudice into symbols of resistance, resilience and pride.

If you haven’t visited yet during the exhibition, don’t miss this excellent art event in MCA. The exhibition will last until 19 October, Check out before it closes!
