Dental school is expensive no matter where you go.

Some schools are dramatically MORE expensive, and at the end of the day most schools are essentially the same thing!

Based off the best data I could find, and including each of these schools estimated full costs of attendance (including tuition, fees, books, health insurance, transportation, federal loan fees) these are currently the four most expensive dental schools, and the costs you would incur over your time in dental school. It does not include interest, which is staggeringly high compared to even when I was in dental schools. Even federal loans are around 9-10% or more as the federal reserve raises rates.

Federal loans now tap out at $50k per year with $200k total lifetime allowance, meaning a lot of this cost would need to be covered with either private loans, going through the military / service programs, or family help (which is a lot more common than many admit, and I feel distorts just how devastating dental school cost is for those who actually pay their own way).

The real question is how sustainable is this, and how much harm is it doing to providers’ mental health?

After my last post, a lot of you shared your own stories about tragedy you’ve experienced. They reminded me how many people are carrying grief that nobody else can see, especially the grief experienced after losing a loved one to suicide.

When Lauren passed away, I didn’t know what life was supposed to look like anymore. I had an immediate descent into complete shock, horror, confusion, and panic. I didn’t fully realize it until later, but life was going to be so much more different than ever imaginable.

I forced myself to finish my last semester of dental school. I cried every day, couldn’t sleep, lost so much weight and felt so ill and exhausted all the time. It was so humbling but I knew I needed to move back into my parents’ basement because it wasn’t safe for me to be alone. There were days where just getting up and doing the next thing felt impossible. It was pure hell.

I’m not posting this because I have some perfect inspirational life now. I don’t. I still miss her deeply. I still have hard days that no one sees. And I don’t even like talking about these things because in a way it feels selfish because I still am alive.

But I now do believe there can be life after the worst thing that ever happened to you. Not the same life. But a life where you can keep loving people, keep achieving goals, and keep doing things that would make the person you lost proud.

Lauren’s life was so much more than how it ended. Infinitely more. If sharing this helps even one person feel less alone, then it’s worth sharing with others.

Which is worse for your teeth, orange juice or Coca-Cola?

12 oz of Coke has about 39g of sugar.
12 oz of orange juice has about 36g.

Pretty much the same amount.

But what about the acidity of each?

Coke has a pH around 2.4, while orange juice is closer to 3.8. So Coke starts out significantly more acidic! Anything below a pH of 5.5 basically melts teeth.

Orange juice actually has a higher titratable acidity. Even though its pH isn’t as low, there’s more acid there that your saliva has to neutralize. In one study, orange juice required almost twice as much base to neutralize as Coke.

Both give your teeth a combination of sugar and acid that can contribute to cavities and erosion, especially if you’re sipping on them throughout the day!

Federal loans alone no longer cover the cost of attendance at the cheapest dental school.

I graduated in 2024 and was able to use federal loans to cover the entire cost of attendance of dental school. With new loan rules, the maximum lifetime limit for federal loans is $200k.

I had this experience in the OR this week.

It’s wild how much reach social media has and how much good can be done. I’m not the best communicator but I do know that raising awareness about mental health struggles matters, and when done right can hopefully help others.
