The Magnificent Great Gray Owl 🦉 👑 Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would have such a close encounter. 🥰 As the owl glided effortlessly towards me I watched in awe as it landed softly on my car door. (When I come across an owl in the wild I typically exit my vehicle and leave the door open, even in the dead of winter, to minimize any movements or noise as I prepare to capture my images).I marvelled at its’ beauty as we stood face to face. A once in a lifetime experience I will never forget. Eastern Screech-Owlets ~ hidden in plain sight.👀🌳Cute, curious, fluffy, playful, wide-eyed, and full of personality. Watching these little ones explore their world was one of the highlights of my spring. Their curiosity and antics were a joy to watch. 🦉💛 Moments like this make all the mosquito bites worth it.😂 😖🦟 Having a good telephoto lens to be able to witness this type of interaction in the wild where the owls can be observed from a distance without be disturbed is just magical. The Last Family Portrait🦉 ~ A mother Long-eared Owl sat quietly with her four owlets, nestled together in the safety of their home. Looking through my lens, I had no way of knowing I was witnessing the final moments this family would ever spend together in that nest. Meteorologists had warned that severe thunderstorms would develop that afternoon. By evening, powerful winds, heavy rain, and hail had swept through southern Manitoba. When I return the following day, the nest was gone. Two of the owlets were on the ground beneath the trees. The other two had reached nearby branches, while their mother remained close, continuing to watch over them. The family had survived, but the home that had sheltered them was gone. This photograph is the last image of all five owls together in the only home they had ever known. When I pressed the shutter at 11:32 AM on June 3, 2026 I thought I was photographing five beautiful Long-eared Owls. Eastern Screech Owlets 🍃🦉🦉🦉🦉🍃…and first there were 4! Much to my surprise these 4 fledged the night before this photo was taken! It was only when I reviewed my video from the night before I realized that what I initially thought was an adult feeding them was owlets jumping out of the nest. Better book myself an eye exam 😅. (To my credit the video was after sunset).Looking super cute and curious I was grateful to find these 4 snuggled up together on the same branch the following day. Leo ~ Long Eared Owl 🦉 I love that the feathers below her beak make it look like she is smiling 🙂. This mama owl has every reason to smile as she lovingly watches over her owlets. Her beautiful nest was obliterated during one of our rain, wind and hail storms this spring. The smallest of the small spent the next few days on the ground after being forced to fledge from the nest that no longer existed.
