A mermaid’s tears

A mermaid spent her life caring for the sea
She cultivated the reef community to be happy
No coral out of place, no urchin hungry

She enjoyed the hug of surrounding fish schools
The comfort of a warm tide pool

But when the ecosystem was imbalanced,
No matter the effort forth her underwater palace,
The fish swam away,
The coral branches astray,
The mermaid’s hope began to fray.

She fought for safety,
Her hands shaking,
She gave all she had,
While others kept taking.

Have you noticed how salty?
How the levels are rising in the sea?

The mermaid is drowning
In her own tears she cries.
We have that in common,
The mermaid and I.

Grateful for the opportunity to work with these ancient, wild, wonderful creatures. There are so many lessons to learn from them. (If you feel like hearing my cheesy feelings about coral and life, please proceed 🤓🤿)
