THE GUSTAF’S VANISHING ACT (REPOST)

In this post we’ll be going over the SMOKE 469C for the Carl Gustaf. Its purpose is straightforward, obscuration and marking; whether that be breach sights, troop movements, or smoking out enemy positions. The detonation of the SMOKE 469C is based off impact, there are no additional steps to make it function besides loading it in the gun. Its effective range is roughly 1300m, making it able to reach out farther than Grenade Launchers and has higher probability for “first round effects” and more lenient SDZ’s than a Mortar system. Smoke duration in ideal conditions will last roughly 30 seconds.

Considerations for the SMOKE 469C are simple but can be easily overlooked. Winds can easily disrupt effects of the smoke and work against your scheme of maneuver. It is important to understand smoke behaviors with the wind, this is easily fixed with repetitions by shooting the rounds themselves. Another consideration more so pertaining to safety is ensuring gunners understand their left and right lateral limits when employing the SMOKE 469C, especially from locations not near the maneuver element. You don’t want to pop the cherry too early on 30 seconds of obscuration for maneuver, but you also should not be sending rounds extremely close to friendly units. IF YOU WANT TO RUN THE GUSTAF, LEARN ITS BITE FIRST (REPOST)

Back in 2024 I had the privilege to attend the MAAWS NET Course hosted by Saab (Designers of the M3A1), and have since then been utilized for teaching other Marines on how to employ the system. This post is not here to give you the capabilities of the weapon system (this isn’t Warthunder), but however is here to give general information on the safety piece of this weapon system.

Understanding Overpressure: With the implementation of the Carl Gustaf into the US Military, there has been a recent push in understanding the limitations of overpressure and how much exposure is “too much” for humans. Overpressure is the peak pressure of a blast wave that exceeds the normal atmospheric pressure of around 14.7 PSI; these waves essentially rumble your organs to include your brain and if exposed for too long or often may cause permanent damage such as TBI and can give you what some refer to as “Breacher’s Syndrome”. To mitigate overpressure exposure, a point value system was put in place with majority of M3A1 rounds being placed at 125 points, AT-4’s at 300 points, and M72’s placed at 250 points. You are not to exceed 1000 points within a 24 hour period, or you will run a higher risk of suffering a TBI and long term effects. It is a 10 meter distance from the Gustaf for those who will accumulate points from overpressure. Key note on this as well is that if you fire the M3A1 or other rockets from the prone, it will double the point value meaning that 125 points is now 300 points.

Backblast: The backblast of the M3A1 is similar to a traditional AT-4 in that it is 90 degrees by 100m meters. Considerations for the backblast for all rockets is ensuring there is no one within the blast area, minimal rocks or debris that can turn into projectiles (more prominent with the Illumination round and the required 30 degree angle), and importantly that the Gunner and A-Gunner have nothing past the venturi. A lesser known fact about the backblast is that in below freezing temperatures of all rocket systems, the backblast distance is doubled due to cold air being denser which in turn causes the backblast jet to retain more ene by @topattackmemes

LIGHTING THE FIGHT: CARL G ILLUM EXPLAINED (REPOST)

In this post we’ll be going over a basic overview of the ILLUM 545C with a ground level understanding of how to handle the munition along with basic employment. The ILLUM 545C round is similar to all other Carl Gustaf 84mm munitions in the fact that it is activated by a percussion primer located on the side; the key differences with the ILLUM 545C and other Gustaf rounds is the mechanical time-fuze ring to set the distance at which it goes off and the unique backblast angles when firing at the 20-35 degree angle (meaning you can not fire the ILLUM 545C in the prone and is HIGHLY recommended to NOT be shot in the kneeling). The minimum distance is 300m and maximum distance is at 2100m. It’s brightness is roughly 650,000 candela and will last for around 30 seconds. The ILLUM 545C can be used for a multitude of things such as battlefield illumination or signaling.

Understanding the mechanical ring is simple, align the indexed fuze-setting lugs that are equated to 300m per lug to the indented notch on the ring itself. You can rotate the ring clockwise or counterclockwise to the appropriate distance. If you choose not to adjust the ring it will automatically deploy the ILLUM 545C at 300m. Setting the distance on the fuze should work hand in hand with the Gunner utilizing the FCU and acquiring an accurate distance for where they’d like the munition to go off; while the A-Gunner listens and adjusts the fuze appropriately. This is where I’d recommend finger tips on gloves to be cut off due to feeling the round being imperative. On the safety piece as a PSO, I recommend carrying a red lens light and visually verify the appropriate distance is set on the fuze prior to loading. by @topattackmemes
