Outside, the sun is shining, but we’ve just finished finaling Merry Christmas Aubrey Flint, coming to cinemas from 6 November.

I had great fun designing the magic sounds and creating sonic character for the objects, people and places in this warm, funny, heartfelt story about second chances, wrapped in holiday sparkle. Expect a guaranteed tear or two—think It’s a Wonderful Life meets The Holdovers.

Featuring a stellar cast including Richard E. Grant, Celia Imrie, John Bradley, Adjoa Andoh, Karl Pilkington, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Sophia Di Martino & Nigel Planer.

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been in Glasgow at the mighty @seriousfacilities post production, mixing and colour grading @allriversspill to within an inch of its life.

Amazing to have such care and attention lavished on the film in an incredible city. Caramel wafers, lunchtime jigsaws, skyline ships and brilliant collaborators. What’s not to like.

Huge thanks to @topbintish for incredible sound design, Mike for a superb grade, Adam for a stonking mix , Jamie for precision graphics , Holly for the haggis toasties, and Lisa & Lesley for caring for the film so carefully, especially at such an intense time outside of the studio - director: @jeaniefinlay

Sound Mirrors! A forerunner of radar, these concrete ears, built between 1928-35 were used to provide early warning of enemy aeroplanes (or airships) The Sound Mirrors worked by using their curve to concentrate sound waves by capturing the noise of incoming craft approaching from the mainland focusing it onto a microphone or to a human listener equipped with stethoscope. They had a range of around 20 miles. As ambient noise pollution and planes speeds increased they soon became obsolete. Today they amplify the surrounding bird life, the choo of the Romley steam train and are quite the visual spectacular. They live on the RSPB owned site in Kent next to the Greatstone Lakes. Interesting Dungeness is one of the largest expanses of shingle in the World and is classified as Britain’s only desert by the Met Office. taken in Sound Mirrors by @topbintish

This is my dad holding his Ferguson reel to reel. The machine that first got me interested in sound manipulation. We would mess around pitching and reversing recordings. Things aren’t so different in my professional life now!!

Dad brought this up to London for me to use as a foley prop for a binaural podcast. But I’ve always wanted to do some Delia Derbyshire like experiments with long tape loops spooled around spots in the room. Typing this here to motivate myself to getting round to doing that!!
