-- ᴏɴᴇ ʏᴇᴀʀ ʟᴀᴛᴇʀ --

Success is often defined by the company you keep, the people who challenge you, push you, and quietly raise your standard just by the way they carry themselves.

I didn’t have the privilege of knowing Aaron Clark closely, but the mutual friends we shared speak volumes. The respect they held for him, the way they carry his name, tells you everything about his character.

And that’s where the real measure of success is found, not in the ranks you’ve achieved, or the medals pinned to your chest, but in the company you surround yourself with, and the mark you leave on those who carry this job forward.

In the end, it’s rather simple, do the right thing, live with purpose, and let your actions speak for you.

Because long after we’re gone, the true measure is found in the lives we touched and the strength we genuinely left in others, as Aaron did, for so many.

☘️ Today, we remember and pray for Aaron, his brothers from Rescue Company 1, 4 Truck, and the members of the New York City Fire Department Pipes and Drums.

𝙽𝚘 𝙰𝚋𝚜𝚘𝚕𝚞𝚝𝚎𝚜

For years, FLY-IN and FLY-OUT were not treated as absolutes. The choice depended on the ladder, wood or aluminum, and the realities of the fireground.

As the fire service pursued common standards for safety and measurable objectives, FLY-OUT became gospel. Consistency improved, but the standard began to replace understanding.

👉🏻 FLY-IN lets you extend the fly section against the building while keeping your eyes on the target and potential jumpers. It also keeps the bed and fly sections flush during the climb, creating a cleaner, safer transition between sections.

👉🏻 But FLY-IN has a drawback..During an unconscious victim removal or a headfirst bailout, the bed section can become a hang up point.

Some manufacturers also state that aluminum ladders are approximately 4% stronger when placed FLY-OUT.

❌ This is not an argument for FLY-IN or FLY-OUT. It is an argument for understanding the difference.

Remember, a standard is a starting point, not a substitute for judgment. When conditions demand something different, experience, instinct, and intuition 𝙈𝙐𝙎𝙏 drive the decision.

In the midst of the morning chaos, take a few moments to remember the brothers, police officers, and all the souls taken from us 25 years ago…lives forever etched in our hearts.

Let’s not let “𝙉𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙩” be forgotten.

As I often say, hallways are like highways. You move quickly. You rent hallways but own rooms. That said, mind mapping details along your path is incredibly important. Rooms, doorknobs, turns, all are very critical to your orientation during the search. This is where you gather details and landmarks, using the walls in the hallway as reference points to maintain direction and track distance.

That said, once you enter a room, the script drastically changes. Your reliance on searching the wall becomes 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 less important.

This is where we search through “spatial orientation,” a very different understanding of search than simply following the wall or perimeter of the room, which is often how search is taught at the basic Fire Academy level.

Search, through spatial orientation begins once you enter a room, the door becomes your point of reference. Keep your hips in line with it as you move through the room, never spinning your body or letting your hips twist. Gravitating in 𝙚𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 direction should be based on the room’s layout. If you’re doing a “left handed search,” but the bed is to the right, go right and gravitate your body to the left. There is no reason to stay committed to the wall of a “left hand search.” Also, if
something was to go wrong, or you locate a victim, you can back directly up towards the door regaining your orientation or removing the victim.

So yes, getting to that room, or getting out of the fire apartment when it’s time to go, walls 𝙖𝙧𝙚 a standard of search. They are your compass for direction beyond the threshold. All this considered, however you search or whatever your department's standards are, we 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 cannot allow localized data to dictate the national standards of search.

From the FDNY, NYPD, Port Authority Police, and every New Yorker, September 11th is not simply a day of remembrance. For us, it never ended. It is carried in our firehouses, our memorials, our families, and in the brothers we continue to lose to 9/11 illness. Please understand that September 11th is not one day on the calendar. It is something we live with every day of the year.

Three charities I personally believe in and support:

• 𝟏𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝
The 10th Battalion lost 37 members on September 11th. The scholarship fund gives back to the children and grandchildren of those we lost, as well as those who continue to serve in the 10th Battalion today.

• 𝟑𝟒.𝟑 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
An organization built around remembering the 343 while also supporting FDNY members, families, and firehouses when one of our own is facing loss, illness, or serious hardship.

• 𝐅𝐃𝐍𝐘 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐤𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
An organization that has quietly done an incredible amount for sick and injured firefighters and their families, helping with transportation, medical appointments, hospital visits, and support during some of the hardest times a family can face.
