David (the next James Bond? you didn't hear it from us) has a very special invitation for our event coming up on Monday:

Bond is back!

Come to our bookshop lair on Monday night.

You will see Charlie Higson, Bond author and star of The Fast Show.

He brings us KING ZERO, the latest Bond adventure.

A classic Bond, set in today's world. It's got it all: international locations, gadgets, femme fatales, biffing baddies on the nose, and at the heart of it all, a great baddie with a terrific hideout.

We're very pleased to announce two (very colour-coordinated) history events coming up this November. On the 20th, Jamie Gianoustos will join us for her fascinating, highly anticipated new history of the republican tradition that modern states inherited from ancient Rome; and on the 23rd, Scottish historian and translator (and University of St Andrews alumnus) Ashley Douglas will present her wonderful book on Marie Maitland, a path-breaking woman described as Scotland's 16th century Sappho.

Extra-loyal Topping & Company followers may have seen that our colleagues in Edinburgh said goodbye to their bookseller Sanna recently. Once a bookseller, however, always a bookseller, so we've snatched her over to work with us here in St Andrews. We know they miss her, but she's a delight to work with and we're very happy to have her... eat your heart out, Edinburgh.*

Join us for Sharon Blackie on 'Ripening: Why Women Need Fairy Tales Now' (apple not included); The Maclean Brothers on 'Three Brothers in a Boat'; Emile Chabal on 'The Age of Hobsbawm: The Life of a Revolutionary Historian'; and Jess Elliott Dennison's demo from her new cookbook 'Vegetable Recipes' (and don't worry, there will be tasters).

Hungering for more delicious evenings at our Autumn Literary Festival? Today's your day. We have four new foodie events coming up in October and November, from boozy evenings with Tim Hayward and with Master of Wine Julia Harding, to seasonal cooking with Jeremy Lee (born just 20 miles from St Andrews!) and hearty home-made meals with chef Thom Bateman.

Autumntime is really sinking in – please admire our new seasonally-appropriate window decorations (courtesy of our bookseller and artist-in-residence David). We think we have the autumn atmosphere pretty nailed-down in here, so if you need a reprieve from the cold then do come in for some tea (as depicted in one such decoration).

We're keeping our Autumn Literary Event announcements local today, with a Fifer, a Dundonian, and a faculty member here at the University of St Andrews. We'll be welcoming Fife's own multi-talented musician and storyteller James Yorkston for his new road novel; poet, swimmer, and proud Dundee resident Beth McDonough joins us for an inspiring event to get your body and mind in motion; and Dr Michael Simpson from the School of Geography will take us into the heart of struggles for justice in the modern city. You might have seen the other Topping bookshops have been making posts to celebrate 'Gruffalo Granny''s release with their fancy cardboard stands... well, we forgot to ask the publisher to send us those, so we've had to make our own.

This is a book that really needs no introduction – bring your children (or your grownups) by the bookshop to grab your Gruffalo. by @toppingsstas
