Saturday Sea Story: the one that happened on dry land.

Tim wasn’t aboard a ship for this one. He was in Queens with a church relief group after Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, hauling water filters and dumping 10,000 gallons of pumped water right before the Army showed up with 40,000 more. But the real story is what he saw at a diner the next morning: a tree crew, an angry diner owner, and the fastest flip from threats to “we love you guys, food’s on the house” you’ll ever see.

Once a sailor, always a sailor. Even when the closest body of water is a coffee mug.

Saturday Sea Story 🫡

Boot camp graduation weekend, dress blues on, feeling ten feet tall. A woman walks by, looks us dead in the eye, and says “baby k*llers.” Doesn’t even break stride.

We shake it off and grab lunch at a diner by Navy Pier. Halfway through our burgers, a guy walks up, slams his hand on the table, says “thanks for your service, guys,” and walks out. Left $120 on the table for five sailors.

Chicago giveth and Chicago taketh away.

Also, I’m a Rams fan. Don’t come for me.

Saturday Sea Story, USS Portland, 2018.

We had a young E5 who was already known as a troublemaker. Then a new sailor, we’ll call him Jeffrey, checked aboard.

The E5 had just watched the episode of The Office where Jim hits Dwight with an Altoid every time his computer restarts, until Dwight starts expecting a mint at the sound alone. Classic Pavlov’s dog.

He decided to run the same experiment on Jeffrey. Swap the Altoids for a “bing bong” sound and swap the mint for a punch in the arm. Every time he walked by, bing bong, then a hit.

I may or may not have gotten in on it too.

Enough reps and Jeffrey didn’t even need the punch anymore. Just bing bong and he’d flinch.

Conditioning complete. Sorry Jeffrey.

Saturday Sea Story: RIMPAC 2018, off the coast of Hawaii. One of Tim’s shipmates wanted no part of swim call once sharks came up.

Tim walked him down to CIC, pulled the fathometer reading, seven thousand feet of water, and made his case. No big fish. No sharks. Just you, the ship, and the deep blue.

The sailor got in. Had a great time. Asked how it went, and Tim let him enjoy that for about ten seconds before mentioning the part where there were, in fact, a lot of sharks out there.

Nobody said Navy humor was gentle.
